To thrive as a Player Development Assistant, you need a solid understanding of athletic training, sports psychology, and player evaluation, often supported by a degree in sports management or a related field. Familiarity with athlete performance tracking systems, video analysis tools, and basic data analytics software is commonly required. Strong interpersonal communication, organization, and problem-solving skills help you effectively support players and coaching staff. These abilities are vital for fostering player growth, maximizing performance, and ensuring smooth coordination within sports organizations.

A Player Development Assistant plays a key role in supporting both athletes and coaches by coordinating logistics for practices, games, and travel, managing athlete schedules, and helping implement training programs. It's a great entry point for those interested in sports management or coaching, offering exposure to multiple aspects of athletic program operations.

Job description

The Director of Golf provides leadership and strategic direction for golf operations at Ford’s Colony Country Club, a privately owned, semi private country club located within the Ford’s Colony residential community in Williamsburg, Virginia. The club features 54 holes of championship golf across three separate 18 hole courses, supporting roughly 80,000 rounds annually through a balanced mix of member play and outside guest revenue.

The Director of Golf reports to the General Manager and partners closely with department heads across agronomy, food and beverage, and membership. The next Director of Golf will also play a meaningful role in the long range planning process currently underway.

Ideal candidates bring proven golf operations leadership at a high volume facility, a strong outside play and tournament sales track record, and the ability to balance member service with the demands of a busy public play operation.

  • Lead, coach, and develop a golf department staff of 40 plus including assistant professionals, outside services, and shop personnel
  • Drive tournament, outing, and corporate event business as a primary revenue stream
  • Oversee tee sheet management, pace of play, and outside play yield strategy across all three courses
  • Manage golf shop merchandising, buying, inventory, retail displays, and shop financials
  • Develop and execute member programming, leagues, events, and player development initiatives
  • Maintain full responsibility for golf operations budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting
  • Administer the Rules of Golf and provide education and support to staff and members
  • Oversee golf car fleet operations, maintenance coordination, and record keeping

Additional Qualifications
  • Minimum three (3) years of golf operations leadership experience
  • Experience reporting to a General Manager or executive leader in a club or resort environment

What Success Looks Like After One Year
  • A stable, engaged golf staff aligned with company processes and member expectations
  • Strong outside play and tournament revenue performance against budget
  • Improved merchandise margin and inventory discipline

  • Consistent execution of operational standards across all three courses
  • Productive working relationships with the General Manager, agronomy, food and beverage, and membership teams
  • Meaningful contribution to the long range plan now in development
Why You’ll Love Working Here

This is one of the rare Director of Golf roles that combines genuine operational scale with a strong lifestyle market. You’ll run 54 holes across three distinct championship courses, drive a meaningful tournament and outing business, and shape a long range plan that’s actively being written. Williamsburg offers a low cost of living relative to most coastal metros, a serious year round golf community, and easy access to Richmond, Virginia Beach, and Hampton Roads. The team is established, the membership is active, and the operation is busy enough to make every day matter. For the right professional, this is a chance to step into the title, the scope, and the resume credit that come with running one of the larger golf operations in the region.
