What is a play coordinator?

Play Coordinators are professionals who plan, organize, and supervise play-based activities for children in settings such as schools, community centers, or recreational programs. Their main goal is to create a safe, engaging, and inclusive environment where children can develop social, physical, and cognitive skills through play. Play Coordinators often work closely with parents, teachers, and other staff to ensure that activities meet the needs of all participants and comply with safety standards.

How does a play coordinator typically collaborate with teachers and other staff to create engaging play experiences?

Play Coordinators frequently work alongside teachers, teaching assistants, and other staff to design and implement play-based activities that support both learning and social development. They often consult with educators to align play sessions with curriculum goals and adapt activities for diverse group needs. Regular communication and planning meetings are common, ensuring all team members are aware of schedules, safety protocols, and specific objectives for each session. This collaborative approach helps create a supportive environment where children's creativity and social skills can flourish.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a play coordinator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Play Coordinator, you generally need experience in early childhood education, recreation, or a related field, often supported by a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with child development frameworks, safety protocols, and activity planning tools is typically required. Creativity, strong communication, and the ability to engage and motivate children are standout soft skills in this role. These skills ensure safe, enriching play experiences that foster children's social, emotional, and cognitive growth.

What is the difference between Play Coordinator vs Play Therapist?

AspectPlay CoordinatorPlay Therapist

While both roles involve working with children through play, a Play Coordinator primarily organizes and manages play activities in recreational settings, focusing on engagement and event planning. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

Job description

My Gym Children's Fitness Center is looking to grow its family of teachers! We're seeking out someone who has a passion for fitness, really likes kids, and loves to be part of a tight-knit team that works closely with children and families. A job at My Gym goes beyond just teaching "Mommy and Me" programs and fitness classes; it is one where you build relationships and get to invest in the youth of our community! This is truly a rewarding job where there is opportunity for growth and you find inspiration and genuine appreciation on a daily basis.
Are you someone who...
  • Loves working with children and would consider yourself a kid at heart
  • Is a "people person"
  • Is great at working in collaboration with other people in a fun and supportive environment
  • Has a background in fitness (gymnastics, dance, team sports, cheer, martial arts, or related field)
  • Is patient, outgoing, and has an upbeat personality
  • Can work weekends (We throw wonderful, memorable birthday parties year-round.)
  • Is willing to really grow with us (and the kids!) and can commit to at least a year of employment

If you answered "yes" to the above questions, you may be the right person for us and My Gym may be just the right job for you! As a teacher, you'll be working with children ranging from 6 weeks to 10 years of age; teaching programs that incorporate beginning gymnastics skills, sports, games, movement, songs, and a variety of other unique and exciting activities in a positive, noncompetitive fun environment.
Compensation: $16.00 - $19.00 per hour
My Gym Children's Fitness Center is a lot more than just "Mommy and Me!" From first steps to first handstands, we are committed to creating wonderful Moments That Matter. Our gyms are safe, colorful, and oh-so-clean spaces, and our staff pride themselves on providing a fun, safe, and meaningful experience to each and every family who enters through our doors.
Every day in more than 700 locations worldwide, My Gym kids attend structured, noncompetitive and age-appropriate classes and birthday parties taught by incredibly talented, fun, and happy grown-ups. Our curriculum grows with children and features a wide variety of activities designed to promote coordination, agility, flexibility, motor skills, and social skills. Whether it's a toddler in a parent-participation class wiggling through a warm-up, or a school-aged Ninja kid conquering our Warped Wall, the FUN never stops!
My Gym's brand promise is to love and nurture all children through meaningful play, and it's a promise we take to heart.
We hope you'll join us!
