What is a planning internship?

A planning internship is a temporary, supervised work experience for students or recent graduates interested in urban or regional planning. Interns work with planning departments, consulting firms, or governmental agencies to assist with projects related to land use, transportation, community development, and environmental planning. The internship provides hands-on experience, allowing interns to apply classroom knowledge to real-world problems, gain professional skills, and build a network in the planning field.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on during a planning internship?

As a Planning Intern, you are likely to assist with data collection and analysis, help prepare reports and presentations, and support senior planners in coordinating meetings or community outreach. You may also work on mapping or using GIS software, drafting planning documents, and participating in site visits. The work is typically collaborative, giving you exposure to different departments and the chance to contribute to real-world planning initiatives. This hands-on experience helps you build practical skills and understand the daily operations of a planning team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a planning intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Planning Intern, you typically need a background in urban planning, geography, or a related field, along with strong analytical and research skills.
