A Planned Giving job focuses on securing long-term charitable contributions through bequests, trusts, annuities, and other estate planning tools. Professionals in this role work with donors, financial advisors, and legal professionals to facilitate legacy gifts that support nonprofit organizations. Responsibilities often include donor outreach, relationship management, and ensuring compliance with tax and legal regulations. Strong communication and fundraising skills are essential for success in this field.
Planned Giving professionals spend much of their time cultivating relationships with donors, meeting with prospects to discuss legacy gifts, and partnering with attorneys or financial advisors to facilitate donations. They often conduct presentations, organize donor appreciation events, and draft personalized proposals or communications to educate and engage supporters. Throughout the year, they also collaborate closely with development teams to identify new opportunities and ensure proper recognition and stewardship of planned gifts. Balancing donor outreach with administrative tasks and compliance documentation is a common aspect of the role, making strong organization and communication skills essential.
To thrive in Planned Giving, you need a thorough understanding of nonprofit fundraising, estate planning concepts, and donor relationship management, often supported by a degree in fundraising, business, or a related field. Familiarity with donor management software (such as Raiser's Edge or Salesforce), knowledge of tax laws related to charitable giving, and certifications like the CFRE (Certified Fund Raising Executive) are valuable assets. Exceptional interpersonal skills, strategic thinking, and clear communication set top candidates apart in engaging donors and collaborating with internal teams. These skills are crucial for building long-term donor relationships and securing major gifts that support an organization's mission.
