Placemaking information
What is placemaking?
A Placemaking job focuses on designing and revitalizing public spaces to enhance community engagement, social interaction, and local identity. Professionals in this role collaborate with urban planners, architects, community members, and local governments to create vibrant, inclusive environments. Responsibilities may include community outreach, project planning, and policy development. The goal is to turn spaces into meaningful places that foster a sense of belonging and improve quality of life.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in placemaking?
To thrive in placemaking, you need expertise in urban design, community engagement, and project management, often supported by a background in landscape architecture, urban planning, or a related field. Familiarity with GIS mapping tools, design software like AutoCAD or SketchUp, and public consultation platforms is advantageous. Strong interpersonal communication, cultural sensitivity, and creative problem-solving are essential soft skills for working effectively with diverse stakeholders. These competencies ensure the creation of vibrant, inclusive public spaces that meet both community needs and regulatory requirements.
What are some common challenges faced in a placemaking role?
Professionals in placemaking often navigate challenges such as balancing the diverse interests of stakeholders, managing limited budgets, and addressing regulatory or zoning constraints. Successfully fostering community involvement while maintaining project timelines can also be demanding. Placemaking roles typically require innovative thinking to design spaces that are both functional and culturally relevant, often on sites with unique physical or social considerations. Collaborating closely with urban planners, local governments, architects, and community groups is a key part of overcoming these obstacles and ensuring project success.

Job description
Related Ross is expanding its presence in Boca Raton, bringing its track record of building vibrant, mixed-use destinations to one of South Florida's most dynamic markets. As the company grows its portfolio of properties in the area, the Community and Events Manager will play a central role in shaping the day-to-day energy across these properties, building a calendar of experiences that draws tenants, residents, and the broader Boca Raton community onto Related Ross's properties.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Community and Events Manager is responsible for building and executing a year-round program of events, activations, and community engagement initiatives for Related Ross assets in Boca Raton. This role acts as the primary connector between property management, tenants, residents, retail partners, and outside vendors — creating an active, welcoming destination culture that supports leasing, retention, and the broader placemaking vision for the site.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Design, plan, and execute a recurring calendar of campus events, collaborating across corporate teams including Related Life, Marketing, Communications, Related Ross Foundation and others. Events include tenant appreciation events, wellness programming, seasonal festivals, farmers markets, concerts, and networking mixers.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for tenants and residents on all community programming, gathering feedback and tailoring activations to their interests.
- Manage event logistics end-to-end: budgeting, vendor and venue coordination, permitting, staffing, setup/breakdown, and day-of execution.
- Build and maintain relationships with local businesses, artists, food and beverage vendors, nonprofits, and Boca Raton community organizations to bring outside partners onto campus. Collaborate with the Related Ross Foundation to ensure community engagement initiatives support aligned charitable giving and Foundation goals in the community.
- Develop and manage the community and events budget; track spend against plan and report on ROI and attendance metrics.
- Partner with marketing to promote events across email, social media, signage, and the campus app or website; help develop campus-branded collateral and messaging.
- Coordinate with property operations, security, and engineering teams to ensure events run safely and don't disrupt daily campus operations.
- Support leasing and marketing teams by hosting prospective tenant and resident tours, broker events, and grand-opening activations.
- Manage relationships with outside event vendors and negotiate contracts (catering, AV, entertainment, rentals) within approved budget.
- Track industry trends in placemaking, hospitality, and mixed-use community programming, bringing fresh ideas to keep the campus calendar distinctive.
- Maintain a library of post-event recaps, photography, and attendance data to inform future programming decisions.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Hospitality, Marketing, Communications, Event Management, or related field, or equivalent experience.
- 6+ years of experience in event planning, community management, hospitality, or placemaking, ideally within commercial real estate, mixed-use, or multifamily environments.
- Proven track record planning and executing events of varying scale, from small tenant mixers to large-scale public activations.
- Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple events and vendor relationships simultaneously.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; comfortable representing the brand with tenants, residents, executives, and outside partners.
- Working knowledge of event budgeting, contract negotiation, and vendor management.
- Familiarity with social media and email marketing platforms; basic graphic design or content creation skills a plus.
- Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed for events.
- Local knowledge of the Boca Raton / South Florida market and vendor landscape strongly preferred.
Benefits
- Personalized Health Care: Multiple medical, dental, and vision plan options; Employee Assistance Program
- Financial Benefits: Competitive salary and incentive packages; matching 401(k); FSAs and HSA; employer-paid life and AD&D insurance; paid leave & disability programs
- Social Wellness: 19+ days of PTO; mental health counseling & resources; fertility, surrogacy, and adoption assistance; volunteer days and donation matching
- Career Development: Learning & training programs; tuition & certification reimbursement; internal advancement opportunities
