What is a piping engineer?

Piping engineers design and supervise the building of piping systems that transport gas, oil, water, or sewage. Job duties include surveying work sites and evaluating environmental stress, determining project scope and cost, drafting layout plans and blueprints, and selecting materials for pipes and components for the construction of piping systems. Piping engineers typically use Computer Assisted Design (CAD) software to draft blueprints. In addition to technical and drafting skills, they also need strong project management skills to run projects efficiently from start to finish.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a piping engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Piping Engineer, you typically need a degree in mechanical or chemical engineering, strong knowledge of piping design codes, and experience with project specifications. Proficiency in software such as AutoCAD, PDMS, or CAESAR II, along with familiarity with industry standards like ASME, is commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, teamwork, and effective communication skills help engineers collaborate on complex projects and solve design challenges. These skills are essential to ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective piping systems in industrial environments.

What are the most common challenges faced by piping engineers during large-scale industrial projects?

Piping Engineers often encounter challenges such as coordinating with multiple disciplines (like structural, process, and instrumentation teams), managing changes in project scope, and ensuring compliance with safety and industry standards. Tight project timelines and working with complex 3D modeling software can also pose difficulties, especially when integrating new designs with existing infrastructure. Effective communication and problem-solving skills are essential to address these challenges and deliver successful project outcomes.

What is the difference between Piping Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectPiping EngineerMechanical Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Mechanical/Civil Engineering, certifications like ASME or APIBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, similar certifications
Work EnvironmentOil & gas, petrochemical, power plants, construction sitesManufacturing, automotive, aerospace, industrial facilities
Job FocusDesign, analysis, and maintenance of piping systemsDesign, analysis, and maintenance of mechanical systems and equipment

While both roles require engineering degrees and similar certifications, Piping Engineers specialize in piping systems within industries like oil and gas, whereas Mechanical Engineers have a broader focus on mechanical systems across various sectors. The choice depends on your specific interest in piping versus general mechanical design.

Is a piping engineer a good career?

A piping engineer is a skilled professional responsible for designing, installing, and maintaining piping systems in industries such as oil and gas, chemical, and power plants. The role offers good job prospects, competitive salaries, and opportunities for advancement, especially with relevant certifications and technical expertise. It requires strong knowledge of engineering principles, materials, and safety standards.

Job description

BIOFerm™ is looking for a Piping Engineer to be responsible for the design, specification, and coordination of piping systems used in BIOFerm’s renewable energy facilities. This role ensures that all piping layouts, materials, and assemblies meet project requirements, safety standards, and operational performance goals. The ideal candidate has a strong background in piping design for process or industrial systems, with the ability to work collaboratively across disciplines to deliver high-quality, cost-effective designs.

BIOFerm™ is a Wisconsin-based renewable energy company specializing in turnkey anaerobic digestion and biogas upgrading facilities. Our mission is to provide sustainable and economical solutions for organic waste diversion, transforming food waste, manure, biosolids, and other organic materials into renewable natural gas (RNG), green energy, vehicle fuel, heat, and organic products.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Design and develop piping systems for biogas and anaerobic digestion facilities, including process flow, utility, and support piping.
  • Maintain P&IDs, piping layouts, isometric drawings, and material takeoffs.
  • Select appropriate materials, valves, fittings, and supports based on process conditions, pressure, and compatibility.
  • Collaborate with process, mechanical, structural, and electrical engineers to ensure integrated, constructible designs.
  • Review vendor drawings and submittals for compliance with project specifications and industry standards.
  • Coordinate with project managers, construction teams, and contractors to support fabrication, installation, and testing.
  • Conduct site visits for layout verification, equipment tie-ins, and field modifications.
  • Support procurement efforts by providing technical input on bids and evaluating vendor quotations.
  • Ensure all designs comply with relevant codes, standards, and safety requirements (ASME, ASTM, API, ANSI, etc.).
  • Assist during commissioning and start-up phases by providing technical support and design clarification.
  • Conduct design reviews, constructability assessments, and quality control checks.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and contribute to the development of standard piping design procedures.
  • Complete additional tasks as assigned.
Competencies & Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • 5 years of experience in piping design within industrial, process, or energy sectors (renewable energy experience a plus).
  • Strong knowledge of process piping systems, including layout, stress, and material selection.
  • Proficiency in 2D and 3D CAD design software.
  • Familiarity with P&ID development, bill of materials (BOM), and construction drawing packages.
  • Understanding of piping codes and standards such as ASME B31.3, API, and ASTM.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Willingness to travel periodically to project sites and vendor facilities.
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license.
  • Valid authorization to work in the U.S. without current or future sponsorship.
