What is a pipe rigger?

Pipe riggers are skilled tradespeople who specialize in the installation, alignment, and securing of piping systems in industrial, construction, and manufacturing settings. They are responsible for moving, positioning, and supporting pipes using cranes, hoists, and other rigging equipment, ensuring that all components are safely and accurately placed. Pipe riggers work closely with pipefitters, welders, and engineers to assemble piping systems according to specifications, often in challenging environments such as refineries, shipyards, and chemical plants.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a pipe rigger, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Pipe Rigger, you need expertise in rigging techniques, blueprint reading, and pipe installation, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent and relevant apprenticeship or training. Familiarity with rigging equipment, hoists, cranes, and safety certifications such as OSHA are typically required. Attention to detail, teamwork, and strong problem-solving skills are essential soft skills for this role. These skills and qualifications are critical for ensuring safe, precise, and efficient pipe installation and movement in industrial settings.

What are some common challenges pipe riggers face on large construction projects, and how can they overcome them?

Pipe Riggers on large construction projects often encounter challenges such as coordinating lifts with multiple teams, working in confined or elevated spaces, and adhering to strict safety protocols. Effective communication and teamwork are essential to ensure that heavy pipes and equipment are safely moved and installed. Familiarity with rigging plans, continuous safety training, and proactive problem-solving help Pipe Riggers navigate these challenges while maintaining project timelines and minimizing risk.

Industrial Pipe Welder / Pipefitter

Palmyra, PA
Full-Time | Direct Hire
$30–$40/hour, based on experience
Industrial Piping | TIG | Stick | 6G | Stainless | Carbon Steel

We are hiring experienced Industrial Pipe Welders / Pipefitters for direct-hire opportunities with an established industrial mechanical contractor based in Palmyra, PA.

This is not a production welding job.

We are looking for experienced welders who can fit, lay out, fabricate, and weld industrial piping in the field and shop. You should be comfortable working from blueprints, P&IDs, and isometric drawings and be able to produce high-quality welds on carbon steel and stainless steel pipe.

The strongest candidates will have experience with 6G pipe welding, TIG welding, stick welding, sanitary stainless, pipe fit-up, rigging, fabrication, and industrial plant work.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Fit, fabricate, and weld industrial piping systems
  • Perform 6G pipe welding on carbon steel and stainless steel
  • TIG weld stainless steel pipe
  • Stick weld carbon steel pipe
  • Perform sanitary stainless welding and purge setups when required
  • Measure, cut, bevel, thread, and prepare pipe for fabrication and installation
  • Assemble and fit pipe using clamps, levels, high-low gauges, torches, and other fitting tools
  • Read and interpret blueprints, P&IDs, isometric drawings, and fabrication drawings
  • Calculate takeoffs, offsets, measurements, and pipe layouts
  • Install process piping and mechanical piping systems
  • Rig and position pipe spools, equipment, and structural components
  • Work with chain falls, hoists, lifts, and other rigging equipment
  • Perform field fabrication and shop fabrication
  • Assist with equipment installation, structural work, shutdowns, and plant maintenance
  • Inspect your work and maintain high welding and fabrication standards
  • Follow all jobsite and industrial safety requirements

Welding Experience We're Looking For

Qualified candidates should have strong experience with several of the following:

  • GTAW / TIG welding
  • SMAW / Stick welding
  • 6G pipe welding
  • Carbon steel pipe
  • Stainless steel pipe
  • Schedule 10 through Schedule 80 piping
  • Sanitary stainless piping
  • Purge welding
  • Pipe fit-up
  • Process piping
  • Industrial piping
  • Mechanical piping
  • Structural fabrication
  • Rigging
  • Millwright work
  • Plant shutdowns and outages

Experience with MIG, flux-core, structural welding, and fabrication is also valuable, but this position requires someone who is comfortable working with pipe.

What We're Looking For

  • Several years of professional pipe welding and pipefitting experience
  • Ability to independently fit and weld pipe
  • Ability to read P&IDs, blueprints, and isometric drawings
  • Strong understanding of pipe layout and fabrication
  • Ability to calculate offsets, takeoffs, and measurements
  • Experience with carbon steel and stainless steel
  • Experience welding in multiple positions
  • Strong mechanical aptitude
  • Ability to troubleshoot fit-up and field installation problems
  • Experience working in industrial plants or manufacturing facilities preferred
  • Ability to safely perform rigging and material-handling work
  • Valid driver's license
  • Dependable transportation
  • Ability to pass required weld tests
  • Willingness to work overtime and weekends when projects require it

  • Pay is based on actual welding, fitting, and industrial experience
  • Full-time, direct-hire position
  • Year-round work
  • Overtime after 8 hours worked in a day
  • Saturdays paid at overtime rates
  • Sundays paid at double time
  • Additional premium pay for qualifying holiday work
  • Overtime opportunities available

Projects are generally located within approximately 1.5 hours of the Palmyra, PA shop, with common work throughout the Harrisburg, Lancaster, Allentown, and surrounding areas.

Benefits

  • Health benefits
  • Paid time off
  • Paid holidays
  • Retirement benefits
  • Overtime opportunities
  • Company-provided equipment as required
  • Long-term advancement opportunities
  • Stable workload with an established industrial contractor

The Type of Welder We Want

We are not looking for someone whose experience is limited to production MIG welding or welding the same part repeatedly in a manufacturing environment.

We want a true industrial pipe welder who understands the entire process: reading the drawing, laying out the job, fitting the pipe, preparing the joint, making the weld, and helping install the finished system.

If you can walk onto an industrial project, understand what needs to be built, fit your own pipe, and produce quality welds without someone standing over you all day, we want to talk with you.

Apply Today

Experienced Pipe Welders, Industrial Pipefitters, Combination Welders, TIG Pipe Welders, 6G Welders, Stainless Steel Welders, Process Pipe Welders, Pipefitter/Welders, and Industrial Welders are encouraged to apply.

This is a direct-hire opportunity with long-term work, strong overtime potential, and the opportunity to work on challenging industrial mechanical projects.
