Counselor

Alfred Street Baptist Church (ASBC), is a thriving faith-based institution with a rich history and vibrant ministry. We serve a growing congregation of 12,000 members and we are seeking an experienced Counselor to join our Christian Counseling team. We are seeking a Counselor to provide professional counseling work integrated with a model of Christian counseling. This position is responsible for delivering psychosocial services to individuals in need of counseling and case management services. The ideal candidate combines strong clinical assessment and treatment skills with a deep commitment to faith-based counseling, serving individuals with personal, social, and faith-related concerns including mild to moderate mental illness.

What You'll Do

Clinical Counseling and Assessment

  • Provide individual and group counseling and supportive therapy to members navigating personal, social, and faith-related challenges, including mild to moderate mental illness
  • Manage an active caseload with care, consistency, and clinical rigor
  • Conduct thorough client assessments and develop collaborative treatment plans grounded in evidence-based practice
  • Use the DSM to guide accurate, compassionate conversations around mental health conditions and diagnoses

Crisis Intervention and Community Care

  • Respond to members in crisis with preliminary mental health assessments and short-term intervention services
  • Evaluate requests for external mental health services, determine appropriate levels of care, and connect members with the right resources
  • Facilitate hospital and community referrals in coordination with ASBCs established care network

Documentation and Compliance

  • Maintain accurate, thorough documentation of all client interactions in-person, phone, and electronic
  • Uphold HIPAA standards and the ethical obligations of your licensure with integrity
  • Prepare clear, well-organized written reports and clinical notes
  • Engage actively in team meetings, staff consultations, and in-service trainings, serving as a resource to colleagues and paraprofessionals across the ministry

What We're Looking For

Required:

  • Master's degree in Counseling, Psychology, or Social Work
  • 2+ years of counseling experience
  • Active Virginia licensure as an LPC, LCSW, or LMFT
  • Strong clinical assessment and treatment skills, paired with solid leadership and organizational abilities
  • A genuine, abiding desire to help others with the warmth, discretion, and trustworthiness that vulnerable people need
  • Comfort working both independently and as part of a collaborative, mission-driven team
  • Unwavering commitment to your professional code of ethics
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, client management systems, and related technology

Preferred:

  • Experience in Christian or faith-integrated counseling models
  • Experience managing a high-volume caseload
  • Specialized experience in trauma treatment
  • Experience developing mental health content for blogs, podcasts, or other digital platforms
