Job Description Summary:

The Director, Instructional Affairs & Curriculum Management is an integral member of the Raymond A. Mason School of Business at William & Mary and Mason's Center for Online Learning leadership team. The Director will oversee instructional quality and faculty development for a growing online business programs portfolio; while leading in the development, delivery, management, scheduling and quality assurance of online curriculums and courses.
Reporting to the Associate Dean of Online Programs, the Director will manage instructional quality across the Mason School's online programs, including developing and implementing a comprehensive faculty development program for new and experienced instructors to strategically enhance their online teaching capabilities and improve student learning, while overseeing the application of best practices in online pedagogy and andragogy across all online programs. The Director will also ensure the quality of online instruction through assessments and audits.
Additionally, the Director will oversee processes and policies for recruiting, onboarding, and evaluating the Mason Schools' online adjunct instructors.
In collaboration with faculty, leadership, and external partners, the Director will support faculty in curriculum and course development of online degree program and certificate. The Director will also manage course offerings while steering systematic reviews of online courses. This role will also analyze student outcomes, engagement, and satisfaction data to drive continuous improvement in online course design and delivery incorporating innovation and integrated technology. The Director will work with faculty at the Mason School to identify new course opportunities and enhance ongoing online courses. The Director will also ensure appropriate resources, support, and infrastructures are in place to deliver high-quality learning design that enhances faculty engagement and a connected student experience.
The Director will provide an extremely high level of organization and enthusiasm, and a commitment to a collaborative approach to idea development and implementation. The Director will keep current of learning design best practices and assess industry innovations to integrate into our courses and programs. The Director will also bring the ability to provide a data-driven strategic perspective that will allow the School to make informed decisions and best manage teaching and learning initiatives within our online portfolio.
Additionally, in collaboration with the leadership of both the Mason School and Center for Online Learning, the Director will facilitate the optimal performance of staff by building a team and fostering professional growth so that staff members are equipped to approach challenges of their positions.

Job Description:

  • Qualified candidates will possess advanced knowledge and skills in online learning design, digital instructional technologies, quality assurance methodologies, and enthusiasm for partnerships with an engaged community.

  • Demonstrated experience related to recruiting and managing a network of online instructors is required, as is creating training activities for faculty teaching online.

  • Strong implementation and project management skills are required to succeed in this role.

  • The Director must possess the ability to build partnerships with business school faculty, external partners and various William & Mary departments.

  • Must enjoy working independently and with teams in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment within a traditional higher education institution.

  • Master's degree with significant experience, preferably at least five years, in online curriculum and course design is required.

  • We seek a demonstrated self-starter with strong communication, analytical, and relationship management skills with the ability to make sound decisions who possess a demonstrated ability to work independently with business school faculty, external service providers, and other W&M offices.

  • Strong preference will be given to applicants with previous successful experience leading online curriculum and course development for graduate management business degree and certificate programs.

  • Preferred Ph.D. in learning design or related field.

Conditions of Employment:
This position may require additional hours beyond the typical 40-hour work week, to include occasional evening, night and weekend work, and/or overnight travel, as needed to meet the business needs of the operation.
Remote work scheduling will be determined by the administration of the Mason School of Business.

Job Duties:40%- Curriculum Management:
  • Provides leadership for the Mason School's Center for Online Learning in support of the mission for curriculum and course development. Proactively discovers the needs of faculty and students to guide curriculum updates and course development.

  • Partners with faculty and Mason School leadership to establish priorities for curriculum development and delivery, as well as information gathered on competitors, to develop curriculum development timelines, strategies, and implementation policies and procedures to ensure the effective leveraging of technology, faculty, staff, and financial resources.

  • Supports the creation of governance-related proposals/applications in collaboration with Mason School and University leadership, helping to finalize and submit completed proposal packages to necessary entities within the School and University.

  • Supports communications with others participating in recruitment, admissions, and student success to ensure understanding of new and updated curriculums and courses.

  • Keeps abreast of new developments and research in online education and shares this information with instructors as appropriate.

  • Manages the online course development and revision process in conjunction with external partners to ensure timely delivery.

  • Manages the Course Leaf scheduling system for online courses.

  • Coordinates faculty lead and section lead course section scheduling.

40%- Instructional Quality:
  • Oversees the development and implementation of a comprehensive assessment of online instructional quality measures.

  • Oversees the development and implementation of a comprehensive faculty development program for new and experienced instructors related to online teaching, learning design, and program development.

  • Works collaboratively with external partners regarding the implementation and effective use of learning technology, with special attention to compliance with acce3ssibility and usability principles.

  • Facilitates online program faculty meetings in collaboration with the faculty program director.

  • Monitors faculty satisfaction with online program features: curriculum, learning design, and other aspects of course management.

  • Partners with the Faculty to strategically recruit and hire a diverse network of online section leaders and part-time faculty that support the growth of online programs and enhance student achievement.

  • Co-chairs the search committee for new online section lead hires along with faculty leads. Collaborate with human resources through the hiring process.

  • Creates clear, reasonable, and practical expectations for faculty leads and section leads; while also assessing section lead performance through student achievement and satisfaction data and faculty lead feedback; identifies and recommends areas in need of improvement.

  • Develop strategies to retain top performing online section leads.

10%- Financial Record and Data Management:
  • Develops and manages annual budget for instructional quality and course management.

  • Works with external partners and operational offices to procure, implement, and maintain learning technology contracts.

  • Works with operational offices and institutional research to ensure online programs are compliant with course development requirements.

  • Collects necessary data to support accreditation activities.

  • Creates instructional quality and course management data reports for senior leadership and interprets data for strategic decision-making.

10%- Performance Management, Development, and Inclusion:
  • Provides a professional, client-centered, and respectful atmosphere for all faculty and section leads seeking services from the Center.

  • Develops and recruits a team to provide the first line of contact and assistance for online instructors.

  • Creates clear, reasonable, and effective expectations for the team. Develops and implements performance metrics for direct reports.
