Search & Comparison IntentPeople seeking household management and personal support rolesIndividuals looking for administrative or executive support

The main difference is that a Personal Assistant Household Manager combines personal support with household management duties, often in a private residence, while a Personal Assistant primarily provides administrative support to an individual or executive. The Household Manager role involves overseeing household staff, managing household operations, and coordinating personal tasks, whereas the Personal Assistant focuses on scheduling, correspondence, and administrative tasks.

How does a personal assistant household manager typically balance multiple priorities and manage time effectively?

Personal Assistant Household Managers often juggle a wide range of responsibilities, from scheduling appointments and managing household staff to overseeing vendors and handling errands. Effective time management is essential, and many in this role rely on digital calendars, task management apps, and daily checklists to stay organized. Prioritizing urgent tasks, anticipating the needs of the household, and maintaining clear communication with employers and team members are key strategies. Flexibility and adaptability are also crucial, as priorities can shift quickly in a busy household environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a personal assistant household manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Personal Assistant Household Manager, you need strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and experience in managing schedules, household tasks, and budgets, often supported by relevant administrative or hospitality experience. Familiarity with scheduling software, smart home systems, and budgeting tools is highly beneficial. Discretion, adaptability, and excellent interpersonal skills help you effectively anticipate needs and communicate with household members and vendors. These skills ensure smooth household operations, foster trust, and allow for proactive problem-solving in diverse and dynamic home environments.

ME361 - Full-time House Manager/Family Assistant - Murray Hill, NY

Job description

A warm and welcoming family in Murray Hill is seeking an experienced, highly organized, and hands-on Family Assistant/Household Manager to help maintain a beautifully organized, calm, and well-run home. The family has two independent children, ages 12 and 14, so this is not a traditional nanny position. The role is primarily focused on household organization, day-to-day home upkeep, family support, and ensuring everything runs smoothly.

The ideal candidate genuinely enjoys organizing and takes pride in maintaining a neat, orderly home. This person should be proactive and willing to jump in wherever needed rather than viewing certain household tasks as outside the scope of their role. The family is looking for someone who naturally notices what needs attention and handles it without requiring constant direction.

While the children are largely self-sufficient, the candidate will be a warm and reliable presence during the important after-school and evening hours, checking in with them and providing support as needed.

Schedule

This is a full-time position with a base schedule of approximately 40 hours per week. Exact hours will be established with the selected candidate, with a core schedule anticipated to be approximately 2:00–8:00 p.m. on school days.

Flexibility is important, as the family's schedule may evolve and hours may vary from week to week.

Sunday will be a regular workday, with Saturday generally off. The candidate should have some flexibility to work an occasional Saturday when needed.

The principal may occasionally have evening engagements requiring the candidate to stay later, potentially until approximately 9:30 p.m. or beyond. When convenient for the candidate, private accommodations may be available for an optional overnight stay rather than commuting home late.

Very occasionally, the principal may travel and need the candidate to stay overnight with the children. These overnights will be arranged with advance notice and compensated accordingly.

The family's custody schedule may evolve to an alternating-week arrangement. If this occurs, the weeks when the children are home will require greater availability and flexibility, while the alternate weeks may be considerably lighter. The family therefore wants someone seeking one primary, full-time position who can accommodate some fluctuation in the weekly schedule.

  • Maintain a beautifully organized, orderly, and welcoming household
  • Provide daily upkeep and refresh of the home, with deep cleaning handled by the family's regular cleaner
  • Refresh and maintain the principal's personal spaces on a daily basis
  • Manage family laundry, including washing, folding, putting away, and maintaining organized laundry systems
  • Maintain closets and wardrobes, including ongoing editing, folding, organizing, and seasonal upkeep
  • Organize drawers, cabinets, kitchen spaces, pantry areas, and other household storage
  • Proactively identify areas of the home that need attention and restore order without waiting to be asked
  • Maintain and restock household and pantry supplies
  • Receive meal deliveries and manage meal service from start to finish
  • Heat, plate, and serve family dinners
  • Reset and tidy the kitchen following meals
  • Keep the kitchen and pantry organized and well stocked
  • Assist with light food preparation when appropriate; while professional cooking experience is not required, someone who genuinely enjoys cooking and spending time in the kitchen is strongly preferred
  • Run household and personal errands as needed
  • Coordinate with household vendors and service providers
  • Oversee appointments, deliveries, repairs, and individuals coming into the home
  • Help ensure household systems and routines operate smoothly
  • Provide a warm and reliable presence for the family's two children, ages 12 and 14
  • Check in with the children after school and ensure they have what they need without hovering or providing unnecessary hands-on care
  • Help reinforce reasonable household organization and routines with the children
  • Provide occasional evening supervision
  • Stay overnight with the children on rare occasions when the principal travels, with advance notice
  • Assist with basic care and oversight of the family's cat; feeding, water, and litter systems are largely automated
  • Pitch in wherever necessary to support the household and family

  • Ideally 8–10+ years of experience working in private households
  • Previous experience as a Family Assistant, Household Manager, Executive Housekeeper, or in a similarly hands-on private household role
  • Exceptional organizational skills and a genuine enjoyment of creating and maintaining organized spaces
  • Hands-on mentality and willingness to perform both household management and practical household tasks
  • Highly proactive and able to recognize what needs to be done without being directed
  • Comfortable with laundry, wardrobe care, household organization, light cleaning, kitchen upkeep, and meal service
  • Enjoys cooking and working in the kitchen, although professional culinary experience is not required
  • Comfortable working in a home with older, independent children
  • Warm and nurturing without approaching the position as a traditional nanny role
  • Comfortable with cats and willing to oversee basic pet needs when necessary
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills
  • Discreet, trustworthy, reliable, and respectful of family privacy
  • Flexible regarding occasional schedule changes, later evenings, Saturdays, Sundays, and rare overnights
  • Excellent professional references
  • Seeking a long-term position with a family that values mutual respect and a collaborative working relationship
