JOB TITLE:

Curatorial Internship: Gerald and Joyce Lang Print Study Room

JOB PURPOSE:

The University of Wyoming Art Museum invites applications for a semester-long Curatorial Internship supported by a $3,500 grant from the International Fine Prints and Drawings Association. This paid internship offers a University of Wyoming student the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in curatorial research, exhibition development, and collections stewardship while working with the museum's permanent collection of more than 4,000 prints housed in the Gerald and Joyce Lang Print Study Room.

Working closely with the Museum's Curator and Exhibitions Team, the selected intern will research, develop, and curate the next exhibition in the Print Study Room. Building on the current presentation of contemporary woodblock prints by Paul Binnie, the intern will identify thematic connections across the collection and help create an exhibition highlighting the breadth of the museum's holdings.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The intern will participate in all stages of the curatorial process, including:

  • Researching works from the permanent print collection
  • Developing a thematic exhibition concept
  • Selecting up to 50 works for exhibition
  • Researching artists, printmaking techniques, and historical context
  • Writing interpretive materials and gallery text
  • Assisting with exhibition installation
  • Organizing prints for display in the Print Study Room
  • Presenting a public gallery talk at the conclusion of the internship

The internship will primarily take place on site at the University of Wyoming Art Museum, though some research and writing may be completed remotely with approval from supervising curators.

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:

This internship centers on direct engagement with original works of art. Under curatorial supervision, the intern will receive training in professional art handling and collections care while working closely with prints from the museum's permanent collection. Through sustained examination of materials, techniques, paper types, and printing processes, the intern will develop connoisseurship skills and gain first-hand experience using original works of art as the foundation for research and curatorial decision-making.

In addition to the exhibition project, the intern will have opportunities to attend exhibition planning meetings, observe object-based teaching sessions, engage with University of Wyoming printmaking faculty and students, and receive ongoing mentorship from museum staff.
