About the Job
The University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine (UMN-CVM) is seeking two board-certified or board-eligible Medical Oncologists (ACVIM or ECVIM) as part of a multi-position hiring initiative backed by significant institutional investment, allowing for immediate peer collaboration and cohort building. Position opportunities include full-time (100% appointment) or part-time faculty positions at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor, contract (non-tenure, clinical) track. The salary and rank will be determined based on qualifications and experience. Exact effort allocations tied to the outlined responsibilities are negotiable, though it is expected that these will be clinically focused positions.
As a member of our Oncology team, you will contribute to advancing clinical care, research, training, and teaching in a collaborative academic setting. UMN-CVM offers an exceptional environment for professional development and growth.
Work will be completed on the St. Paul Campus at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities. In-person work is required for the clinical component of the position at the Veterinary Medical Center, largely during traditional Monday - Friday daytime hours. Didactic teaching is also done in person, though other aspects of the role may warrant flexibility for hybrid work. Positions may be part-time or full-time. This position may be eligible for visa sponsorship.
Job Responsibilities
Clinical: 60%-80%, depending on candidate's wishes
* Participate in the diagnosis, management, and treatment of medical oncology cases (primarily non-urgent small animals, but also zoo/exotic and urgent/emergent cases). It is expected you will provide veterinary medical oncology consultations to local veterinarians, faculty and house officers. Clinical teaching responsibilities will include clinical instruction of interns, residents and veterinary students and continuing education for practicing veterinarians. You will work closely with other faculty, house officers, and veterinary technicians to achieve a high standard of medical care delivery.
* Clinical opportunities include:
o Large teaching hospital with a wide array of specialty disciplines collaborating to provide optimal and compassionate patient care.
o State-of-the-art equipment including a 3T MRI, a 128-slice CT scanner with cardiac gating, interventional radiology suite, and a new Varian EDGE linear accelerator.
o Medical and Radiation Oncology are housed in large, windowed spaces.
o Diverse caseload from a wide referral base including multiple private-practice oncologists in the region to aid in recruitment for trials and share in the demand for care.
Research: 5%-20%
* Engage in independent and/or collaborative research to advance clinical research efforts, as well as basic and translational comparative oncology.
* Engage in new and ongoing clinical and translational research trials.
* Research Opportunities include:
o There are numerous opportunities for cooperative, team-science-based research both within and outside the CVM, including the UMN Medical School, the UMN Masonic Cancer Center (an NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center) and its Translational Working Groups.
o The UMN-CVM Clinical Investigation Center supports clinical studies and preclinical research with technical infrastructure, budgeting assistance, and study coordination according to GCP and GLP guidelines.
o The University of Minnesota is a member of the V Foundation's Canine Oncology Research Consortium (CORC), the Big Ten Cancer Research Consortium, and the Comparative Oncology Trials Consortium (COTC).
o Outstanding training in grant writing is available, excellent pre-award services are provided, and there are numerous internal and external funding opportunities.
Teaching & Professional Development: 5%-15%
* Contribute to the development of didactic coursework and integration into all four years of curriculum. It is expected that didactic teaching focuses on outcomes with an emphasis on active learning activities to enable our students to develop competence in clinical skills, communication, collaboration, clinical reasoning and problem solving. A student-centered philosophy of education is required.
* Teaching & Professional Development opportunities include:
o Contribute to the training and mentoring of medical oncology residents, DVM students, and house officers through clinical and didactic instruction.
o Receive support and instruction for teaching from the CVM Academic and Student Affairs Office and the Center for Educational Innovation.
o Many opportunities for professional development including individual mentorship as well as training in leadership, communication, conflict management, and many others.
o Opportunities to engage with an active group of veterinary and physician researchers, graduate students, and house officers through attendance at interest groups, journal clubs, and research seminars.
o Enjoy a supportive work environment that encourages work-life balance and personal growth opportunities.
Service/Outreach: 0%-5%
* Service/Outreach responsibilities may include personal development, outreach to external stakeholders and service to the CVM and other veterinary-related professional organizations. Participation in departmental and university service will be appropriate at each stage of your career progression, as is fostering a diverse, inclusive and communicative academic environment in the department and university.
* Expectations of the service component of your position include providing expert advice to referring veterinarians, attending departmental and collegiate faculty meetings, and serving on departmental, collegiate, and university committees.
* DVM/VMD or equivalent veterinary degree.
* Board certification or eligibility in Medical Oncology from ACVIM or ECVIM.
* Eligible for Minnesota state veterinary licensure.
* Demonstrated clinical and interpersonal skills with a commitment to collaborative patient care, research, and teaching.
