Permanent Statutory Accounting information

What does a permanent statutory accountant do?

A permanent statutory accountant is responsible for preparing and maintaining financial statements in compliance with statutory requirements and accounting standards. They ensure accurate reporting for regulatory agencies, often working with audit teams and using accounting software to meet legal deadlines and standards.

What is permanent statutory accounting?

Permanent Statutory Accounting refers to the ongoing process of preparing and maintaining financial records and statements in accordance with statutory accounting principles (SAP), which are rules and guidelines mandated by regulatory bodies, especially in the insurance industry. These principles differ from general accounting standards and are designed to ensure companies remain solvent and financially stable. Professionals in this field are responsible for ensuring compliance with legal requirements, submitting regulatory reports, and keeping accurate, up-to-date records. This work is crucial for organizations to meet state and federal regulations and to provide transparency to regulators and stakeholders.

What is the difference between Permanent Statutory Accounting vs Financial Accountant?

AspectPermanent Statutory AccountingFinancial Accountant
CredentialsAccounting certifications (e.g., CPA), knowledge of statutory regulationsAccounting certifications, financial reporting knowledge
Work EnvironmentRegulatory compliance, audit-focused, often within insurance, banking, or corporate sectorsCorporate finance departments, reporting, and analysis
Employer & IndustryInsurance companies, banks, large corporations with statutory reporting needsVarious industries including corporate, finance, and consulting firms

Permanent Statutory Accounting primarily focuses on preparing financial statements in compliance with statutory regulations, often for regulatory reporting and audits. Financial Accountants handle broader financial reporting, analysis, and internal financial management. While both roles require accounting expertise, Permanent Statutory Accountants specialize in statutory compliance, whereas Financial Accountants focus on overall financial health and reporting.

What are some common challenges faced in a permanent statutory accounting role, and how can I prepare for them?

In a Permanent Statutory Accounting role, one common challenge is staying updated on frequent changes in local and international accounting regulations, which can impact financial reporting and compliance. You may also encounter tight deadlines during statutory closing periods and audits, requiring strong organizational and time management skills. Collaborating with cross-functional teams, such as tax, audit, and operations, is essential for ensuring accurate and timely filings. Preparing by developing a keen attention to detail and keeping abreast of regulatory updates can help you succeed in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a permanent statutory accountant?

To thrive as a Permanent Statutory Accountant, you need a strong background in financial accounting, statutory reporting, and knowledge of local and international accounting standards, typically supported by a degree in accounting or finance and a recognized professional qualification (such as ACCA, ACA, or CPA). Familiarity with accounting software (like SAP or Oracle), advanced Excel skills, and experience with regulatory compliance tools are commonly required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills help professionals excel when interpreting complex regulations and interacting with auditors or stakeholders. These competencies ensure accurate statutory filings, regulatory compliance, and the financial integrity of the organization.

About us

MBS operates satellites, ground stations, and secure communications networks to ensure that armed forces, government agencies, and businesses remain reliably connected anytime and anywhere.

As an owner-managed, mid-sized company specializing in satellite communications and space technology, we employ around 300 people across our locations in Germany, France, and Poland. With our own ground infrastructure, including the largest teleport in Germany, we have been developing and operating highly reliable satellite and data network communication solutions for government and industrial customers for over 45 years.

Working at MBS means making a direct contribution to Europe’s security infrastructure, with real responsibility from day one.

As Head of Accounting (m/f/d), you will be responsible for the further development and management of the Group’s accounting function. Together with international finance teams, you will shape efficient, reliable, and future-oriented accounting processes across the organization.

Your tasks
  • Lead, manage, and further develop the Accounting department, with responsibility for the general ledger, financial close processes, finance systems, and interfaces with Treasury and Tax
  • Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual closing activities, ensuring timely, accurate, and insightful financial reporting
  • Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards, statutory requirements, and internal group policies
  • Maintain the quality, integrity, and reliability of financial data across ERP and finance systems while driving the continuous improvement and automation of existing processes
  • Coordinate and optimize end-to-end accounting processes, from bookkeeping and account reconciliations through to reporting and system integration
  • Provide functional leadership and collaborate closely with international finance teams to ensure group-wide standards and consistent processes
  • Act as a trusted business partner and key point of contact for accounting-related matters, working closely with external partners as well as internal stakeholders across management and controlling
  • Define, implement, and monitor accounting policies, processes, and internal controls, while supporting the introduction of new systems, tools, and reporting requirements
Your profile
  • Master's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field
  • Several years of professional experience in Accounting or Finance, ideally within a dynamic international environment
  • Additional professional qualifications, such as Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Chartered Accountant (CA), or equivalent, are considered an advantage
  • Strong leadership skills with a proven track record of successfully leading, motivating, and developing teams
  • Ability to bring together people and stakeholders across functions and legal entities to drive common goals and achieve results
  • High level of ownership, accuracy, and reliability combined with a hands‑on approach
  • Structured, solution‑oriented, and proactive working style with the drive to actively shape and improve processes and initiatives
  • Ability to thrive in dynamic organizational structures and a willingness to take responsibility in a fast‑changing international environment
  • Excellent communication skills, entrepreneurial mindset, and the motivation to be part of an ambitious team with significant scope for impact and influence
  • Required language skills: German – C1, English – B2
We offer
  • Freedom, trust, and ownership in your area of responsibility within an international environment characterized by flat hierarchies and short decision‑making paths

  • Comprehensive work equipment, including a company mobile phone and laptop
  • Free charging facilities for electric vehicles at our headquarters in Usingen
  • Long‑term support for your professional growth through training and development opportunities
  • Permanent employment contract, 30 days of annual leave, and employer contributions to the company pension scheme
  • Additional financial benefits, including a benefits card with monthly credit and subsidized electric vehicle leasing through employer contributions
  • Complimentary coffee and water, as well as an on‑site cafeteria offering freshly prepared meals
