Job Summary and Essential Job Duties:

The Manufacturing Engineering Technologist (MET) assists the Manufacturing Engineer (ME) to troubleshoot, optimize, and improve precision optics manufacturing processes.


Through On the Job Training (OJT), Manufacturing Engineering Technicians will:

  • Process Optimization: Assist the ME to determine engineering tasks, project timelines, and process pathways.
  • Troubleshooting: Support manufacturing teams by systematically resolving technical production issues.
  • Continuous Improvement: Analyze process flows using Lean tools to improve quality, throughput, and cost.
  • Data Documentation: Record improvement results accurately to ensure standardized, retrievable workflows.
  • Team Collaboration: Work closely with team members and fill in on the production line when needed.
  • Project Leadership: Lead targeted improvement initiatives directed by the ME and Team Leaders.
  • Culture & Performance: Encourage teams to exceed productivity goals while maintaining high quality.
  • Root Cause Analysis: Facilitate the 5-Why process and follow up on cell-specific corrective actions.
  • Technical Communication: Serve as a technical point of contact for customers and vendors when the ME is unavailable.


Advancement through the MET ranks is attained via increasing levels of education, experience, industrial skills, math skills, computing skills, responsibility and leadership potential and effectiveness.

 

Education Requirements: 

  • 2 or 4 year engineering or technical degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 1 year of optics manufacturing and/or optics testing or equivalent education.


Minimum Requirements:

  • Software Literacy: Familiarity with Microsoft Office, GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing), and CAD/CAM software.
  • Training Delivery: Ability to create and deliver Just-In-Time (JIT) training for production staff.
  • Soft Skills: Top-notch interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Professional Demeanor: Enthusiastic, cooperative, positive, and able to work effectively in teams.

 

Work Requirements: 

Physical Demands:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch: and talk and hear.
  • The job may involve prolong periods of sitting/standing.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. 
  • Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp.

Work Environment:

  • This position works in a manufacturing environment. The noise level can vary from quiet to loud frequencies.
  • May involve the use of oils and solvents.
  • Generally works in a clean environment and works to maintain the environment as such.
  • May require area specific safety training.
  • The employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes.
  • May be assigned to various production areas as needs require.
