What is a performance manager?

A performance manager seeks to create a system in which employees can perform at their best by creating clear goals and expectations. Rather than a traditional corporate system of employee appraisal and evaluation, performance managers try to communicate end goals and align each employee’s work with these aims. In this role, you may seek the development of benchmarks so that the company’s departments or groups can measure their progress concretely. This is an ongoing effort. Benchmarks and goals must change, so you must continually find new ways to measure progress and to inspire effort.

How does a performance manager typically collaborate with other departments to drive organizational success?

Performance Managers work closely with leaders and teams across departments—such as HR, operations, and finance—to align performance metrics with organizational goals. They often facilitate regular meetings to review progress, provide feedback, and identify areas for improvement. This role requires strong communication skills and the ability to translate data insights into actionable strategies that support both team development and business objectives. Effective collaboration ensures that performance initiatives are integrated and sustained throughout the organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a performance manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Performance Manager, you need a strong background in analytics, goal-setting frameworks, and organizational development, often supported by a degree in business or human resources. Familiarity with performance management systems, HR analytics tools, and project management software is typically required. Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving abilities set standout candidates apart in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for driving employee productivity, aligning team objectives with organizational goals, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

About Us
Heidelberg Materials is one of the world's largest suppliers of building materials. Heidelberg Materials North America operates over 450 locations across the U.S. and Canada with approximately 9,000 employees.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Lead Ready-Mix technical and materials performance improvement initiatives across NAM (North America).

  • Identify and prioritize high-impact opportunities related to mix performance, quality consistency, materials usage, batching discipline, production process control, and cost-to-produce.

  • Translate field observations, QC results, batch data, mix-design information, and operational performance indicators into clear, actionable improvement plans.

  • Analyze large datasets from QC systems, batch systems, tickets, mix designs, and test results to identify trends, exceptions, root causes, and improvement opportunities.

  • Lead root-cause analysis on technical and operational performance issues, including strength variability, overdesign, slump / air consistency, water demand, aggregate moisture, batching accuracy, sequencing, mixing practices, testing practices, and corrective actions.

  • Support the development and execution of the NAM Ready-Mix materials strategy, including mix optimization, technical standards, quality discipline, and performance routines.

  • Partner with regional quality, operations, commercial, and plant teams to convert technical findings into practical actions and measurable results.

  • Strengthen the Performance Management Program by building better KPIs, control limits, action triggers, follow-up discipline, and accountability around technical and materials performance.

  • Act as a trusted technical advisor to regional and NAM leadership, constructively challenging assumptions and helping raise performance expectations.

  • Support adoption of tools and technologies that improve quality visibility, mix performance, batching discipline, and technical decision-making.

What Are We Looking For

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Materials Science, Concrete Technology, Construction Materials, Engineering, or a related field preferred; equivalent Ready-Mix technical experience considered.

  • 5+ years of experience in Ready-Mix, concrete materials, technical services, quality, mix design, batching, or related construction-materials environments.

  • Strong knowledge of Ready-Mix performance drivers, including mix design, raw materials, batching, strength, durability, quality, and consistency.

  • Experience leveraging technical expertise to improve operational performance, customer outcomes, cost management, and profitability.

  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to evaluate data, identify trends, manage performance metrics, and drive data-based decisions.

  • Proven ability to lead root-cause analysis, implement corrective actions, and drive measurable continuous improvement.

  • Effective communicator and influencer with the ability to collaborate across quality, operations, sales, leadership, and regional teams in a matrixed environment.

Strong preference for candidates located in or willing to relocate to the DFW area; however, exceptional candidates based in other major markets will also be considered.

Work Environment

This is a NAM role operating across office, plant, lab, and field environments, with regular exposure to Ready-Mix technical and operational processes. The position will require travel to operating locations and time at Ready-Mix plants, labs, and field locations, following all safety and environmental protocols.
