What is a performance engineering manager?

Performance Engineering Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing teams that ensure software applications and systems operate efficiently and reliably under expected workloads. They focus on optimizing performance, scalability, and stability by identifying bottlenecks, setting performance standards, and implementing best practices. These managers collaborate closely with development, QA, and operations teams to deliver high-performing products, often leveraging tools for monitoring and analysis. Their role also includes mentoring engineers, managing project timelines, and communicating performance goals to stakeholders.

How does a performance engineering manager typically collaborate with development and operations teams to ensure optimal system performance?

A Performance Engineering Manager works closely with both development and operations teams to establish performance benchmarks, identify potential bottlenecks early in the software development lifecycle, and implement performance testing protocols. This role often involves facilitating regular meetings to review performance metrics, coordinating load and stress testing efforts, and providing actionable feedback for code optimization. By fostering open communication and aligning goals across teams, the Performance Engineering Manager ensures that performance considerations are integrated into every stage of product development and deployment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a performance engineering manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Performance Engineering Manager, you need a solid background in software engineering, performance testing, and systems optimization, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as JMeter, LoadRunner, APM solutions, and cloud platforms is typically required, along with knowledge of performance monitoring and automation frameworks. Strong leadership, analytical thinking, and effective communication are critical soft skills for guiding teams and collaborating across departments. These skills ensure the delivery of high-performing software solutions, drive continuous improvement, and help meet business scalability and reliability goals.

Job description

Requisition ID: 270193ย
Join a purpose driven winning team, committed to results, in an inclusive and high-performing culture.

The Performance Engineer of Infrastructure Performance Engineering is a senior technical Engineerย
responsible for personally leading and resolving the most complex, high-impact infrastructure performance andย
resiliency issues across GTEP, while simultaneously establishing a durable, cross-domain performanceย
engineering practice. The role ensures infrastructure performance, scalability, and resiliency are proactivelyย
engineered and continuously improved to support business-critical applications and services, in alignment withย
enterprise architecture standards and operational excellence objectives.

Is this role right for you? In this role, you will:
Acts as a senior troubleshooting escalation point for the Global Network Operations Center (GNOC),ย
providing expert-level support during major incidents, including deep technical triage, packet analysis,ย
and cross-platform diagnostics.
Define performance KPIs and service health metrics across network, compute, storage, cloud, security,ย
middleware, and infrastructure services.
Partner with application, architecture, security, and operations teams to validate end-to-end applicationย
flows and dependencies.
Promote automation and observability maturity, including dashboards, alerts, synthetic monitoring,ย
distributed tracing, and correlation across platforms.
Leads incident response support for complex, multi-domain issues, ensuring rapid identification of rootย
cause and driving resolution across engineering teams.
Develop executive-level reporting on performance trends, resiliency gaps, recurring issues, andย
improvement progress.
Lead/Support change readiness reviews by assessing performance risk before major infrastructureย
releases, migrations, or upgrades
Leads and drives a customer focused culture throughout their team to deepen client relationships andย
leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.
Lead post-incident performance reviews to identify systemic improvements, not just immediate rootย
cause.
Introduce performance testing and validation practices for infrastructure changes before productionย
deployment.
Establish reusable troubleshooting playbooks for recurring infrastructure performance patterns andย
high-impact incident types.
Drive proactive capacity and scalability assessments for business-critical platforms and upcomingย
technology changes.
Establishes and leads a cross-domain infrastructure performance engineering practice, definingย
standards, methodologies, and tooling to measure, analyze, and improve performance across allย
infrastructure layers.
Establish baselines and thresholds for latency, packet loss, throughput, response time, resourceย
saturation, and availability.
Develops and delivers training and upskilling programs to improve organizational capabilities in multiplatform troubleshooting, including packet analysis (e.g., Wireshark) and observability tooling (e.g.,ย
Dynatrace).
Establishes and operates a proactive resiliency review program, identifying weaknesses and failureย
points across critical infrastructure and application paths, with a focus on preventing high-impactย
incidents.
Role requires coordination with global teams, vendors, and managed service providers across multipleย
time zones globally.ย
Requires ability to work under pressure during high-severity incidents involving multiple technologyย
domains and stakeholders
Required to support major incidents, critical escalations, and after-hours troubleshooting based onย
business impact.
Required to produce technical briefings, executive summaries, root cause analysis reports, andย
remediation roadmaps. Ability to translate complex technical issues into business impact, risk, andย
decision-ready recommendations.
Creates an environment in which his/her team pursues effective and efficient operations of theirย
respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank's Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Salesย
Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day businessย
controls.
Builds a high-performance environment and implements a people strategy that attracts, retains,ย
develops and motivates their team by fostering an inclusive work environment and using a coachingย
mindset and behaviours; communicating vision/values/business strategy; and, managing successionย
and development planning for the team.

Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role? We'd love to work with you if you have:
Multi-discipline infrastructure subject matter expert with deep experience across network, networkย

Strong operational experience, including leadership during major incidents, complex triage, andย
cross-domain troubleshooting.
Demonstrated ability to analyze and optimize performance across multi-layered infrastructure andย
application environments.
Experience working with observability platforms and diagnostic tooling (e.g., packet analysis,ย
distributed tracing, metrics platforms).
Knowledge of network protocols, routing, load balancing, DNS, TLS, firewalls, proxies,ย
VPN, and identity/access flows
Hands-on experience with tools such as Wireshark, ThousandEyes, Dynatrace, Splunk,ย
