What is a performance engineering manager?

Performance Engineering Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing teams that ensure software applications and systems operate efficiently and reliably under expected workloads. They focus on optimizing performance, scalability, and stability by identifying bottlenecks, setting performance standards, and implementing best practices. These managers collaborate closely with development, QA, and operations teams to deliver high-performing products, often leveraging tools for monitoring and analysis. Their role also includes mentoring engineers, managing project timelines, and communicating performance goals to stakeholders.

How does a performance engineering manager typically collaborate with development and operations teams to ensure optimal system performance?

A Performance Engineering Manager works closely with both development and operations teams to establish performance benchmarks, identify potential bottlenecks early in the software development lifecycle, and implement performance testing protocols. This role often involves facilitating regular meetings to review performance metrics, coordinating load and stress testing efforts, and providing actionable feedback for code optimization. By fostering open communication and aligning goals across teams, the Performance Engineering Manager ensures that performance considerations are integrated into every stage of product development and deployment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a performance engineering manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Performance Engineering Manager, you need a solid background in software engineering, performance testing, and systems optimization, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as JMeter, LoadRunner, APM solutions, and cloud platforms is typically required, along with knowledge of performance monitoring and automation frameworks. Strong leadership, analytical thinking, and effective communication are critical soft skills for guiding teams and collaborating across departments. These skills ensure the delivery of high-performing software solutions, drive continuous improvement, and help meet business scalability and reliability goals.

Job description

Engineering Manager - Partner Platform

This is a Toronto based hybrid 2x/week in office position.

About OpenTable

With millions of diners, 60,000+ restaurant partners and 25+ years of experience, OpenTable, part of Booking Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ: BKNG), is an industry leader with a passion for helping restaurants thrive. Our world-class technology empowers restaurants to focus on what matters most - their team, their guests, and their bottom line - while enabling diners to discover and book the perfect restaurant for every occasion.

Every employee at OpenTable has a tangible impact on what we do and how we do it. You'll also be part of a global team and its portfolio of metasearch brands. Hospitality is all about taking care of others, and it defines our culture.ย

The Role

We are looking for an Engineering Manager to lead a critical team building and maintaining OpenTable's partner ecosystem. This team sits at the intersection of our core systems and the global digital economy, building the interfaces that allow the world to interact with OpenTable.

Our team builds and maintains the high-scale APIs that power the entire OpenTable workflow for external developers. We manage agentic access to OpenTable systems and own deep integrations with major partners including Google, Uber, Amazon, OpenAI, and Anthropic. We ensure that whether a reservation starts in a search engine, a ride-sharing app, or through an AI agent, the experience is seamless and reliable.

This is a hands-on leadership role that combines people leadership with strong technical ownership. You will shape API architecture, guide execution, and develop engineers while working in a complex environment where developer experience and system resilience are paramount.

What You Will Do

  • Build and lead a high performing team: Create a strong and inclusive team culture grounded in trust, accountability, and clear expectations. Coach engineers across all levels, providing direct feedback and managing performance to develop senior and staff-level talent.

  • Define API standards and excellence: Set the technical direction for our partner-facing interfaces. Drive architectural decisions that prioritize API performance, consistency, and a world-class developer experience. Establish rigorous standards for API security, ensuring all external access is protected and audited.

  • Ensure resilience and fault tolerance: Architect systems for failure isolation and fault tolerance. You will be accountable for the reliability of our integrations, ensuring that issues in partner systems do not degrade OpenTable's core platform performance or correctness.

  • Drive partner-centric delivery: Translate partner needs and product goals into clear engineering priorities. Manage complex dependencies with external platforms like Google and Amazon, eliminating blockers and ensuring integrations hit performance targets and deliver business impact.

  • Scale agentic and third-party access: Own the full lifecycle of the platforms managing agentic access to our systems. Use data to inform technical investments in high-throughput API gateways and measuring the success of our developer ecosystem.

What We Are Looking For

  • API & Integration Leadership: Deep experience building and operating high-scale, public-facing APIs. Strong fundamentals in API design (REST, GraphQL, gRPC), versioning, and developer experience. Proven ability to design for resiliency, failure isolation, and high availability in distributed environments.

  • Security & Performance Mindset: Experience implementing robust API security protocols (OAuth, JWT, Rate Limiting) and managing high-throughput traffic. Ability to optimize for low latency while maintaining strict data consistency across partner boundaries.

  • People & Stakeholder Management: Experience managing and developing engineers, including senior contributors. Strong communication skills to partner with external engineering teams at major tech companies and internal Product and Design stakeholders.

Nice to have

  • Experience with marketplaces, search, or transaction heavy systems.

  • Experience operating multi region, low latency systems.

  • Familiarity with Kubernetes and modern cloud infrastructure.

  • Experience evolving legacy systems while continuing to deliver customer value.

Benefits and Perks

  • Work from (almost) anywhere for up to 20 days per year

  • Focus on mental health and well-being:

    • Company-paid therapy sessions through SpringHealth

    • Company-paid subscription to HeadSpace

    • Company-wide week off a year - the whole team fully recharges (and returns without a pile-up of work!)

  • Paid parental leave

  • Generous paid vacation + time off for your birthday

  • Paid volunteer time

  • Focus on your career growth:

    • Development Dollars

    • Leadership development

    • Access to thousands of on-demand e-learnings

  • Travel Discounts

  • Employee Resource Groups

  • 20 days of paid time off upon start

  • Private health and dental insurance

  • Life and Disability insurance

The best connections happen face-to-face, whether you're sitting down to dinner or having coffee with a coworker. That's why OpenTable has adopted a hybrid workplace model. This role aligns with that approach, with an expectation of coming into the office two days a week-giving employees the best of both worlds: in-person collaboration and flexibility.

The expected range of compensation for this position based in Toronto, Canada, is $160,000-$190,000 CAD.ย There are a variety of factors that go into determining a compensation range, including but not limited to external market benchmark data, geographic location, and years of experience sought/required.

We offer a competitive base salary and benefits including: health benefits; flexible spending account; retirement benefits; life insurance; paid time off (including PTO, paid sick leave, medical leave, bereavement leave, floating holidays and paid holidays); and parental leave benefits. This role is eligible to be considered for an annual bonus and equity grant.

Work Environment & Flexibility

At OpenTable, we pride ourselves on fostering a global and dynamic work environment. As a team member with us, you will benefit from a schedule tailored to accommodate a global workforce operating across multiple time zones. While the majority of your responsibilities may align with conventional business hours, there will be instances where you are expected to manage communications - via calls, Slack messages, or emails - outside of regular working hours to effectively collaborate with international colleagues, respond to restaurant partners, and/or address urgent matters. OpenTable will always abide by and consider local laws and regulations.

Inclusion

We're committed to creating a workplace where everyone feels they belong and can thrive. We know the best ideas come when we bring different voices to the table, so we're building a team as dynamic as the diners and restaurants we serve-and fostering a culture where everyone feels welcome to be themselves.

If you need accommodations during the application or interview process, or on the job, we're here to support you. Please reach out to your recruiter to request any accommodations.
