Job Location: Staff Development Building - Hamden, CT 06517Position Type: Per DiemSalary Range: $40.00 - $50.00 HourlyJob Category: Consultant

Location

Various school districts and professional settings (on-call) throughout and outside of Connecticut through a virtual platform.

Current Need

Spanish interpreters/translators are needed for in-person assignments. American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters are needed for both virtual and in-person assignments.

Preferred Experience

Candidates with prior professional interpretation and/or translation experience are preferred. Experience working in educational, financial, medical, legal, or other professional settings is highly desirable.

Interpretation Services
  • Provide accurate, real-time verbal interpretation during meetings, including Individualized Education Program (PPT) meetings, parent-teacher conferences, and other educational or professional settings, both in-person and virtually.
  • Interpret spoken communication between individuals, families, educators, professionals, and other involved parties, ensuring clarity and cultural sensitivity.
Translation Services
  • Translate written documents, including educational materials, notices, reports, and forms, from English to the target language and vice versa.
  • Maintain accuracy and confidentiality in all translated materials, ensuring that translations are culturally relevant.
  • Review and verify translations for accuracy, grammar, readability, and style, and edit materials as needed.
Professional Development
  • Attend training sessions and workshops as required to maintain high standards of professional interpretation and translation skills.
  • Stay updated on best practices, terminology, and cultural competency relevant to the fields in which services are provided.
Communication Support
  • Provide clear oral and written communication from English to the individual’s primary language and vice versa, supporting mutual understanding during diverse meetings and professional interactions.
  • Answer questions and clarify information in both the source and target languages for internal and external parties, ensuring accurate and sensitive communication.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent; college degree preferred.
  • Proficiency in English and the target language(s), with proven experience in interpretation and translation in one or more of these fields such as educational, legal, medical and financial settings.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak fluently in English and the second language, with accurate pronunciation, speed, and comprehension.
  • Strong linguistic, cultural, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to interpret and translate complex terminology accurately.
  • Strong attention to detail, confidentiality, and ethical practices.
  • Flexibility and reliability to work on an as-needed basis.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Proficiency in Google applications (Google Docs, Google Sheets, etc.).
  • Familiarity with virtual meeting platforms (Google Meet, Zoom, Microsoft Teams).
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse school staff, students, and families while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Reliable transportation for travel to different school sites.
  • Experience in educational interpreting and translation, especially in supporting special education (IEP meetings, curriculum materials).
  • Ability to review and edit translations from others to ensure high-quality, culturally appropriate documents.
  • Interpreter/Translator certification preferred or willingness to obtain certification/training.
