What is a Per Diem CNA?

A Per Diem CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) is a healthcare professional who works on an as-needed, flexible basis rather than adhering to a fixed schedule. Per Diem CNAs fill staffing gaps in hospitals, nursing homes, or other care facilities, often covering shifts during busy periods, staff shortages, or vacations. They have the same responsibilities as regular CNAs, such as assisting patients with daily activities and monitoring vital signs, but enjoy greater flexibility in choosing when and where to work.

What is a per diem CNA?

A per diem CNA is a certified nursing assistant who works on a flexible (not fixed) schedule. CNAs perform a number of duties that support the nursing staff in providing primary care to patients in medical facilities, such as hospitals or hospice care facilities. Your responsibilities include washing and bathing patients, feeding them, turning or repositioning them, helping them into wheelchairs or other assisted mobility devices, measuring a patient’s vital signs (such as blood pressure and temperature), and listening to the patient describe their condition. You report to nurses and take orders from them.

How does working as a Per Diem CNA differ from a full-time CNA in terms of scheduling and team integration?

Working as a Per Diem CNA offers greater flexibility in scheduling, allowing you to choose shifts based on your availability, which is ideal for those seeking work-life balance or supplemental income. However, this flexibility can also mean less predictability in hours and assignments. Per Diem CNAs may work with different teams and in various departments, requiring adaptability and quick rapport-building with new colleagues and patients. While you may not always be as integrated into a specific team as a full-time employee, the role provides valuable experience across diverse healthcare settings and can lead to long-term opportunities if desired.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Per Diem CNA, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Per Diem CNA, you need a solid understanding of basic patient care, assistance with daily living activities, and current CNA certification. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems and standard medical equipment is commonly required. Flexibility, strong communication skills, and reliability are essential soft skills, especially when adapting to different shifts and care environments. These capabilities are vital to providing consistent, high-quality care and ensuring smooth operations across diverse healthcare settings.

The main difference between a Per Diem Cna and a Full-Time Cna lies in scheduling and employment stability. Per Diem Cnas work on an as-needed basis with flexible shifts, offering greater scheduling flexibility but less job security. Full-Time Cnas have scheduled hours and consistent employment, providing stability and benefits. Both roles require the same CNA certification and often work in similar healthcare settings.

Is per diem CNA worth it?

Per diem CNAs work on a flexible, as-needed basis, often providing short-term coverage in healthcare facilities. This role offers the advantage of flexible scheduling and the opportunity to gain diverse experience, but it may lack benefits and job stability compared to full-time positions.
