What is a pension risk transfer manager?

Pension Risk Transfer Managers are professionals who oversee the process of transferring pension liabilities from a company's balance sheet to an insurance company or other financial institution. They help organizations manage and reduce the financial risks associated with defined benefit pension plans by facilitating transactions such as buyouts or buy-ins. These managers are responsible for evaluating pension plans, coordinating with stakeholders, and ensuring that the transfer process complies with regulations and meets the needs of both the plan sponsor and participants.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a pension risk transfer manager?

To thrive as a Pension Risk Transfer Manager, you need expertise in pension plan structures, actuarial analysis, financial risk assessment, and typically a background in finance, actuarial science, or a related field. How you'll help move us forward:
  • Lead all aspects of the onboarding process for complex PRT and DCLI transactions, ensuring successful implementation and transition to Pacific Life platforms.
  • Serve as the primary relationship manager for plan sponsors, consultants, prior recordkeepers, third-party administrators, and key internal stakeholders throughout implementation and ongoing support.
  • Own and continuously improve key SE&I processes by establishing best practices, documentation, controls, service standards, and governance to support growth and risk mitigation.
  • Lead cross-functional initiatives and projects that improve implementation capabilities, operational effectiveness, scalability, and client experience.
  • Act as a subject matter expert and mentor by sharing knowledge, training team members, and influencing outcomes across Sales, Pricing, Operations, Compliance, and Technology.

  • Outside-the-box thinking with strong problem-solving skills; ability to deal with ambiguity
  • Proven ability to lead complex projects, manage competing priorities, and drive results in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent relationship management, communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal guidance while leveraging expertise to influence decisions and mentor others.
What makes you stand out:
  • Experience establishing service-level agreements, governance frameworks, operational controls, or scalable implementation practices.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365, including Microsoft Copilot, and experience leveraging AI-enabled tools to increase productivity, improve decision-making, automate routine work, and enhance client outcomes.
