What is a pediatric assistant?

Pediatric Assistants are healthcare professionals who support pediatricians and other medical staff in caring for infants, children, and adolescents. Their responsibilities may include taking vital signs, preparing patients for exams, collecting specimens, administering basic treatments, and providing comfort to young patients and their families. Pediatric Assistants also help with administrative tasks such as scheduling appointments and maintaining medical records. They play a crucial role in ensuring that pediatric care is delivered efficiently and compassionately.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a pediatric assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Pediatric Assistant, you need foundational knowledge in child healthcare, basic medical procedures, and a high school diploma or relevant certification such as Certified Medical Assistant (CMA). Familiarity with pediatric electronic health records (EHRs), basic lab equipment, and immunization tracking systems is commonly required. Exceptional communication, patience, and the ability to connect with children and their families are vital soft skills. These competencies ensure effective support for pediatricians, positive patient experiences, and the safe delivery of care to young patients.

What are some typical challenges faced by pediatric assistants when working with young patients?

Pediatric Assistants often encounter challenges such as communicating effectively with children who may be anxious or uncooperative during medical visits. Building trust and using age-appropriate language are essential skills in these situations. Additionally, Pediatric Assistants must work closely with parents or guardians to accurately gather patient information and provide care instructions. Balancing compassionate care with efficiency in a busy pediatric environment is a common aspect of the role.

What is the difference between Pediatric Assistant vs Pediatric Nurse?

While both roles support children's healthcare, Pediatric Assistants typically handle supportive tasks and assist physicians, whereas Pediatric Nurses provide direct patient care and have advanced nursing credentials. The roles differ mainly in responsibilities and required certifications, but both work in pediatric healthcare settings.

How do you become a pediatric assistant?

To become a pediatric assistant, candidates typically need a high school diploma or equivalent and relevant experience working with children, such as in childcare or healthcare settings. Some positions may require certification in CPR or first aid, and strong communication and organizational skills are important for supporting pediatric healthcare providers and families.

Job description

About Joie Pediatric Dentistry

Joie Pediatric Dentistry is a brand-new, doctor-owned pediatric dental practice in Ramsey, NJ. We’re not your typical dental office, we’ve built a fun, movie-themed experience designed to make every visit feel like an adventure for kids and stress-free for parents. We’re looking for a dental assistant who shares our energy, loves working with children, and wants to be part of something from the ground up.

The Role

We’re hiring a part-time dental assistant to work alongside our pediatric dentist chairside. You’ll play a key role in delivering an exceptional patient experience for kids and their families.

What You’ll Do

  • Assist chairside during pediatric dental procedures including exams, cleanings, sealants, restorations, and extractions

  • Take and process digital dental radiographs (X-rays)

  • Prepare treatment rooms, sterilize instruments, and maintain infection control protocols

  • Help manage patient flow and keep the schedule running smoothly

  • Educate kids and parents on oral hygiene in a fun, approachable way

  • Chart and document treatment notes accurately

  • Create a warm, welcoming environment that puts kids (and nervous parents) at ease

What We’re Looking For

  • Minimum 1 year of dental assisting experience (pediatric experience strongly preferred)

  • Current NJ X-ray certification/license — required

  • Comfortable working with children of all ages, including toddlers and patients with special needs

  • Positive attitude, high energy, and a genuine love for kids

  • Strong communication skills: you’ll be the friendly face that makes kids feel safe

  • Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently when needed

  • CPR/BLS certification (or willingness to obtain before start date)

Why Joie?

  • Ground-floor opportunity. Help shape the culture and workflows of a brand-new practice

  • Work directly with a board-certified pediatric dentist who values her team

  • Fun, modern, kid-friendly environment

  • Competitive hourly pay based on experience

  • Flexible part-time schedule

Schedule

Part-time, approximately 2–3 days per week. Specific days and hours will be discussed during the interview. No evenings or weekends required.

Company Description

Joie Pediatric Dentistry is a brand-new pediatric dental office opening in Ramsey, NJ in Early 2026. Founded by Dr. Sabrine Obbad, a board-certified pediatric dentist, Joie is built to be a modern, kid-friendly practice where families actually enjoy coming to the dentist. We're a startup, which means you won't be walking into someone else's system, you'll be helping build one from the ground up. If you thrive in a fast-paced environment, like taking ownership of your role, and want to grow with a practice from day one, this is the opportunity.
