What is the difference between Pcb Designer vs Pcb Engineer?

AspectPcb DesignerPcb Engineer
ResponsibilitiesDesigns PCB layouts, creates schematics, and prepares manufacturing filesDevelops PCB concepts, tests prototypes, and ensures electrical performance
Required SkillsProficiency in PCB design software, schematic capture, and layout techniquesStrong understanding of electronics, signal integrity, and testing methods
CredentialsAssociate's or Bachelor's in Electronics or Electrical Engineering, PCB design certificationsBachelor's or higher in Electronics Engineering, relevant certifications
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, manufacturing facilitiesDesign labs, testing environments, R&D departments

While both Pcb Designers and Pcb Engineers work closely in PCB development, Pcb Designers focus on creating detailed layouts and preparing files for manufacturing, whereas Pcb Engineers are involved in the overall electrical design, testing, and validation of PCB prototypes. Understanding these distinctions helps in choosing the right career path or job role in electronics manufacturing.

What is a PCB designer?

A PCB is a printed circuit board. PCBs support electronic components, such as transistors, diodes, and capacitors. A PCB designer uses computer software programs to design the layout for these printed circuit boards, collaborates with engineers to create 3D models of circuit boards, develops PCB design guidelines, and drafts plans for manufacturers. Printed circuit board designers make it possible for people to use computers, television sets, microwaves, and mobile phones.

What are some common challenges PCB designers face when collaborating with hardware engineers and manufacturers?

PCB Designers often need to balance the technical requirements from hardware engineers with the practical constraints set by manufacturers. Challenges can include ensuring that complex circuit layouts meet electrical and mechanical specifications, managing tight deadlines, and adapting designs to fit component availability or fabrication limitations. Effective communication and a proactive approach to design reviews are key to resolving these issues and ensuring a smooth transition from design to production. Building strong relationships with both engineers and manufacturers helps streamline the process and reduces the risk of costly redesigns.

Job description

Job Title: Hardware Engineer

Job Description

This role focuses on developing, testing, and optimizing printed circuit board (PCB) solutions for residential and power products. You will work closely with hardware engineers, software engineers, and product teams to deliver high-performing, reliable, and compliant electrical solutions within an IoT and cloud-connected environment.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to new product design and sustaining activities for analog, digital, RF, and mixed-signal electronic circuit designs used in residential power systems.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to plan and execute electrical hardware development tasks, including board validation and verification activities.
  • Conduct hardware functional, environmental, and lifecycle validation to ensure product reliability, performance, and robustness over time.
  • Support product safety, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), and environmental compliance efforts by participating in design reviews and testing activities.
  • Participate in electrical hardware reviews and contribute to continuous improvement of products, design methodologies, and development processes.
  • Provide hands-on support for hardware troubleshooting during product development, testing, and sustaining engineering activities.
  • Document electrical system designs, implementation details, test results, and design changes in a clear and organized manner.
  • Use standard electronics laboratory tools such as oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, and digital multimeters (DMM) to analyze, debug, and confirm proper operation of electronic circuits and systems.
  • Occasionally develop custom electrical equipment or fixtures to support specialized features, functions, or test requirements.
  • Collaborate in developing electrical hardware project timelines, task breakdowns, and budget estimates.
  • Define hardware requirements and help ensure traceability of testing and validation activities back to those requirements, where applicable.
  • Contribute to designs for wireless systems, including technologies such as BLE, Wi‑Fi, ISM, and LTE, when needed.
  • Support compliance-oriented design work, including sensing and control, while managing sustaining responsibilities for existing products.
  • Interface with engines and motor drivers and perform design and validation work primarily at the integrated circuit (IC) level.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering is required; a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering is preferred.
  • 1–2+ years of work experience in electrical hardware development, depending on education.
  • Experience collaborating on technical teams that design and develop electrical hardware.
  • Proficiency with circuit capture and PCB design tools, such as OrCAD.
  • Experience with electronic circuit board modeling and simulation techniques, such as PSpice.
  • Working knowledge of microcontrollers, microprocessors, memory devices, analog-to-digital converters (ADC), and common communications technologies.
  • Ability to use standard electronics lab equipment, including oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, and digital multimeters, for analysis and debugging.
  • Strong motivation and the ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment while also working independently to achieve results.
  • Strong engineering experience with a focus on hardware design for power systems and related applications.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience defining hardware requirements and ensuring test activities are traceable to those requirements.
  • Knowledge of control systems used for power systems and residential power applications.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Experience with design for wireless systems, including BLE, Wi‑Fi, ISM, and LTE technologies.
  • RF knowledge and exposure to RF design concepts.
  • Experience with module integration and designing electronic systems for regulatory and safety compliance.
  • Familiarity with UL certification processes and design standards.
  • Awareness of EMI/EMC testing methods and design practices that support compliance.
  • Exposure to PCB layout, including collaboration with layout engineers and review of layout constraints.
  • Experience in compliance-focused sensing design work combined with sustaining engineering responsibilities.
  • Experience interfacing with engines and motor drivers, particularly at the IC level.

Work Environment

You will work within a modern engineering environment that is connected to cloud-based systems and operates in an Internet of Things (IoT) context. The role typically involves approximately three days per week onsite in a lab environment, with some flexibility in scheduling. Onsite work includes hands-on use of electronics test and measurement equipment for both sustaining engineering and new product development (NPD) activities. The environment emphasizes collaboration, technical excellence, and continuous improvement, providing opportunities to work on innovative residential power and IoT solutions alongside a strong engineering team.
