Electrical Engineer Pcb Design information

What does an Electrical Engineer specializing in PCB Design do?

An Electrical Engineer specializing in PCB (Printed Circuit Board) Design is responsible for creating the layout and schematics of circuit boards used in electronic devices. They use specialized software to design the circuitry, ensure the board meets electrical and mechanical requirements, and collaborate with other engineers to test and refine prototypes. Their work is crucial for the development of reliable and efficient electronic products in industries such as consumer electronics, automotive, and telecommunications.

What are some common challenges faced by Electrical Engineers specializing in PCB Design, and how can they be addressed?

Electrical Engineers focused on PCB (Printed Circuit Board) Design often encounter challenges such as managing signal integrity, minimizing electromagnetic interference, and fitting complex circuits into limited space. Collaboration with mechanical engineers and firmware developers is essential to ensure the design meets all technical and manufacturability requirements. Staying updated with the latest design tools and industry standards, as well as conducting thorough design reviews, can help address these challenges and prevent costly errors during production.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Electrical Engineer specializing in PCB Design, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrical Engineer in PCB Design, you need a solid background in electrical engineering principles, circuit analysis, and PCB layout, typically backed by a relevant degree. Expertise with industry-standard design tools like Altium Designer, Eagle, or OrCAD, as well as familiarity with IPC standards and possibly a Professional Engineer (PE) license, is often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with cross-functional teams and ensure design reliability. These skills are crucial for creating efficient, manufacturable, and reliable PCBs that meet safety and performance standards.

What is the difference between Electrical Engineer Pcb Design vs Electrical Engineer Power Systems?

AspectElectrical Engineer Pcb DesignElectrical Engineer Power Systems
CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, certifications in PCB design (e.g., IPC standards)Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering, certifications in power systems (e.g., PE license)
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, electronics manufacturing facilitiesUtility companies, power plants, industrial facilities
Industry UsageConsumer electronics, aerospace, telecommunicationsEnergy, utilities, infrastructure
Job FocusCreating PCB layouts, circuit schematics, ensuring manufacturabilityDesigning power distribution, grid stability, and energy systems

Electrical Engineer Pcb Design focuses on creating printed circuit boards for electronic devices, while Electrical Engineer Power Systems specializes in designing and managing electrical power distribution and infrastructure. Both roles require electrical engineering credentials but differ in industry focus and work environment.

Job description

Electrical Design Engineer – PCB Layout & Power Electronics

Up to $100,000 Base Salary • Greater Milwaukee Area • 100% Onsite Join a steadily growing, privately held electronic product manufacturer engineering high-spec solutions for demanding environments Take full lifecycle ownership of hardware projects from blank-sheet concept and board layout through prototyping and production

  • EXPERIENCE 4+ years of professional circuit design experience with an engineering degree, OR 10+ years of proven technical depth in lieu of a degree
  • CORE EXPERTISE Hands-on PCB layout, schematic capture, and analog/mixed-signal power supply design
  • SCHEDULE & TRAVEL Full-time standard hours with minimal domestic travel (~20 days per year total)
  • COMPENSATION Up to $100,000 annual base salary (fully commensurate with technical depth) + competitive benefits and 401(k) matching
  • WORK TYPE Full-Time, Permanent, W-2 direct hire position (100% Onsite role; agile and collaborative environment)
  • LOCATION Greater Milwaukee / Northeast Wisconsin manufacturing corridor (Must reside within a comfortable commuting distance)
  • COMPLIANCE Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without current or future sponsorship requirements

If you are an electrical engineer who wants to escape the hyper-siloed, slow-moving corporate structures of massive conglomerates, we offer an environment where you can actually stretch your wings. We are a small, highly stable, and privately held manufacturer experiencing steady year-over-year market expansion. We specialize in designing and producing highly engineered, performance-critical electronic products used in demanding global applications. Because we keep our team lean, you will bypass multi-layered bureaucracy and gain immediate, direct visibility to executive leadership.

This is a true full-lifecycle engineering seat. You won't just be handed a tiny, repetitive piece of a pre-existing blueprint; you will take total ownership of your designs from initial concept and schematic creation through PCB layout, component selection, rapid prototyping, and production verification. You will balance multiple concurrent projects spanning diverse industrial applications, ensuring your day-to-day workflow remains highly varied, technically challenging, and deeply engaging. If you are looking for a career home where your design fingerprints are clearly visible on the final product, this is the perfect playground for your craft.

What You Will Be Doing
  • Designing and laying out complex multi-layer PCBs from initial concept development through to final manufacturing and production release
  • Developing, optimizing, and testing robust power supply topologies, including analog and mixed-signal circuitry
  • Creating detailed electrical schematics, clear technical specifications, and accurate, production-ready Bills of Materials (BOMs)
  • Supporting hands-on prototype builds, lab testing, firmware debugging verification, and initial manufacturing line startups
  • Generating comprehensive technical documentation, test plans, and engineering change notices (ECNs) to support corporate project deliverables
  • Performing critical circuit reliability analysis, component derating assessments, and supporting internal quality assurance processes
  • Managing multiple project timelines simultaneously, communicating effectively across production and leadership teams to hit product release dates
What We Are Looking For
  • Hardware Design Pedigree: 4 or more years of hands-on experience executing circuit design and complex PCB layouts. (A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering is preferred; however, we will proudly consider a master tradesperson with 10+ years of direct, advanced design experience in lieu of a formal degree).
  • Power & Analog Fluency: Proven competency in the design, component selection, and optimization of power supplies or complex analog/mixed-signal systems.
  • Documentation Rigor: A flawless ability to read, interpret, and author technical schematics, component specifications, and assembly instructions.
  • Regulated Manufacturing Literacy: Prior exposure working within a quality-driven, ISO-certified, or heavily regulated manufacturing environment where documentation and traceability matter.
  • Self-Directed Initiative: A self-motivated, organized professional who excels at multitasking independently and driving active projects to completion with minimal supervision.
Strong Pluses (Not Required)
  • Familiarity with advanced circuit simulation software platforms (PSpice, LTspice, or similar)
  • Direct exposure to mechanical integration and enclosure constraints using 3D modeling tools (SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor, or similar)
  • Basic embedded systems literacy or firmware familiarity (C/C++, microcontrollers)
  • Design experience targeting high-reliability, ruggedized, or performance-critical industrial sectors
