What does an Electrical Engineer specializing in PCB Design do?

An Electrical Engineer specializing in PCB (Printed Circuit Board) Design is responsible for creating the layout and schematics of circuit boards used in electronic devices. They use specialized software to design the circuitry, ensure the board meets electrical and mechanical requirements, and collaborate with other engineers to test and refine prototypes. Their work is crucial for the development of reliable and efficient electronic products in industries such as consumer electronics, automotive, and telecommunications.

What are some common challenges faced by Electrical Engineers specializing in PCB Design, and how can they be addressed?

Electrical Engineers focused on PCB (Printed Circuit Board) Design often encounter challenges such as managing signal integrity, minimizing electromagnetic interference, and fitting complex circuits into limited space. Collaboration with mechanical engineers and firmware developers is essential to ensure the design meets all technical and manufacturability requirements. Staying updated with the latest design tools and industry standards, as well as conducting thorough design reviews, can help address these challenges and prevent costly errors during production.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Electrical Engineer specializing in PCB Design, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrical Engineer in PCB Design, you need a solid background in electrical engineering principles, circuit analysis, and PCB layout, typically backed by a relevant degree. Expertise with industry-standard design tools like Altium Designer, Eagle, or OrCAD, as well as familiarity with IPC standards and possibly a Professional Engineer (PE) license, is often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with cross-functional teams and ensure design reliability. These skills are crucial for creating efficient, manufacturable, and reliable PCBs that meet safety and performance standards.

What is the difference between Electrical Engineer Pcb Design vs Electrical Engineer Power Systems?

AspectElectrical Engineer Pcb DesignElectrical Engineer Power Systems
CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, certifications in PCB design (e.g., IPC standards)Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering, certifications in power systems (e.g., PE license)
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, electronics manufacturing facilitiesUtility companies, power plants, industrial facilities
Industry UsageConsumer electronics, aerospace, telecommunicationsEnergy, utilities, infrastructure
Job FocusCreating PCB layouts, circuit schematics, ensuring manufacturabilityDesigning power distribution, grid stability, and energy systems

Electrical Engineer Pcb Design focuses on creating printed circuit boards for electronic devices, while Electrical Engineer Power Systems specializes in designing and managing electrical power distribution and infrastructure. Both roles require electrical engineering credentials but differ in industry focus and work environment.

Job description

As Electrical Engineer, PCB Design at Carbon Robotics, you will design the circuit boards that power our revolutionary products. You'll create everything from high-reliability embedded control boards to power electronics that operate in harsh agricultural environments. From rapid prototyping to optimizing for high-volume manufacturing, you'll do whatever it takes - which might include going to the farm - to ensure our customers have reliable and safe products.

What you'll do:

  • Design PCBs for diverse applications including laser control systems, motor drives, power distribution, control panels, vehicle ECUs, and sensor interfaces
  • Create high-speed digital boards for embedded computing, image processing, and real-time control systems
  • Develop power electronics PCBs handling high currents for motor control and power distribution
  • Design mixed-signal boards integrating precision analog, digital processing, and power management
  • Optimize PCB layouts for EMI/EMC compliance, thermal management, and automotive reliability standards
  • Implement design for manufacturing (DFM) and design for test (DFT) strategies across product lines
  • Collaborate with firmware teams on microcontroller selection, memory architecture, and peripheral interfaces
  • Support contract manufacturers through prototyping, bring-up, test development, and production ramp

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities for Success:

  • 2 - 8+ years experience in PCB design for embedded systems and power electronics
  • Expert proficiency in Altium Designer (v18+) including multi-board projects and multi layer designs as well as analytical design optimization tools
  • Proficiency in embedded systems including microcontrollers, FPGAs, and communication interfaces
  • Significant experience with power electronics layout including thermal management and high-current routing
  • Experience with high-speed digital design (DDR interfaces, differential pairs, impedance control)
  • Previous experience developing PCBs for agricultural/automotive/aerospace applications that meet strict environmental (vibration, temperature, high humidity, EMC) and regulatory requirements.
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes, component selection, and cost optimization
  • Willingness to travel ~10% of the time to support products in the production & field environments with a demonstrated ability to work directly with internal and external stakeholders/customers
  • BS+ in Electrical Engineering or related field
