Electrical Engineer Pcb Design information

What does an electrical engineer specializing in PCB design do?

An Electrical Engineer specializing in PCB (Printed Circuit Board) Design is responsible for creating the layout and schematics of circuit boards used in electronic devices. They use specialized software to design the circuitry, ensure the board meets electrical and mechanical requirements, and collaborate with other engineers to test and refine prototypes. Their work is crucial for the development of reliable and efficient electronic products in industries such as consumer electronics, automotive, and telecommunications.

What are some common challenges faced by electrical engineers specializing in PCB design, and how can they be addressed?

Electrical Engineers focused on PCB (Printed Circuit Board) Design often encounter challenges such as managing signal integrity, minimizing electromagnetic interference, and fitting complex circuits into limited space. Collaboration with mechanical engineers and firmware developers is essential to ensure the design meets all technical and manufacturability requirements. Staying updated with the latest design tools and industry standards, as well as conducting thorough design reviews, can help address these challenges and prevent costly errors during production.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electrical engineer specializing in PCB design?

To thrive as an Electrical Engineer in PCB Design, you need a solid background in electrical engineering principles, circuit analysis, and PCB layout, typically backed by a relevant degree. Expertise with industry-standard design tools like Altium Designer, Eagle, or OrCAD, as well as familiarity with IPC standards and possibly a Professional Engineer (PE) license, is often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with cross-functional teams and ensure design reliability. These skills are crucial for creating efficient, manufacturable, and reliable PCBs that meet safety and performance standards.

What is the difference between Electrical Engineer Pcb Design vs Electrical Engineer Power Systems?

AspectElectrical Engineer Pcb DesignElectrical Engineer Power Systems

Electrical Engineer / PCB Design Engineer

Job Description

We are seeking an innovative Electrical Engineer / PCB Design Engineer to join our dynamic team. This role is essential in developing advanced tethered unmanned aerial systems (UAS) for both defense and commercial applications. The position requires a U.S. Person due to ITAR regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Design complex multilayer PCBs for advanced unmanned systems and supporting electronics.
  • Own hardware development from concept through production release.
  • Create schematics, perform component selection, and develop board layouts using Altium Designer or similar tools.
  • Develop mixed-signal, power, motor-control, and control system electronics.
  • Participate in hardware architecture and design reviews.
  • Troubleshoot prototype and production hardware, performing root-cause analysis and corrective actions.
  • Support PCB bring-up, validation, integration, and qualification testing.
  • Collaborate closely with mechanical, software, systems, manufacturing, and test engineering teams.
  • Work directly with manufacturing partners to support prototype and production builds.
  • Contribute to new product development initiatives and next-generation system designs.
  • Support design-for-manufacturability (DFM) and design-for-testability (DFT) activities.
  • Help drive projects from initial requirements through field deployment and sustainment.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
  • 7–10+ years of hands-on electrical engineering and PCB design experience.
  • Extensive experience designing complex multilayer PCBs for various applications including commercial, industrial, aerospace, robotics, automotive, or defense products.
  • Proficiency with Altium Designer or similar ECAD platforms.
  • Strong understanding of schematic capture, PCB layout, signal integrity, and electronic system integration.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and drive projects with minimal oversight.
  • Experience troubleshooting and validating physical hardware systems.
  • Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • Must qualify as a U.S. Person under ITAR regulations.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • High-speed digital PCB design experience.
  • Mixed-signal electronics experience.
  • Power electronics and power supply design experience.
  • Motor control design experience.
  • RF, EMI/EMC, or MIL-STD-related design experience.
  • Experience supporting products exposed to harsh environmental conditions.
  • Experience working with unmanned systems, robotics, autonomous platforms, industrial equipment, or other electromechanical products.
  • Experience in a fast-paced small-company environment.
  • Experience supporting products that move, operate outdoors, or are deployed in real-world field environments.
