Electrical Engineer Pcb Design information

What does an electrical engineer specializing in PCB design do?

An Electrical Engineer specializing in PCB (Printed Circuit Board) Design is responsible for creating the layout and schematics of circuit boards used in electronic devices. They use specialized software to design the circuitry, ensure the board meets electrical and mechanical requirements, and collaborate with other engineers to test and refine prototypes. Their work is crucial for the development of reliable and efficient electronic products in industries such as consumer electronics, automotive, and telecommunications.

What are some common challenges faced by electrical engineers specializing in PCB design, and how can they be addressed?

Electrical Engineers focused on PCB (Printed Circuit Board) Design often encounter challenges such as managing signal integrity, minimizing electromagnetic interference, and fitting complex circuits into limited space. Collaboration with mechanical engineers and firmware developers is essential to ensure the design meets all technical and manufacturability requirements. Staying updated with the latest design tools and industry standards, as well as conducting thorough design reviews, can help address these challenges and prevent costly errors during production.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electrical engineer specializing in PCB design?

To thrive as an Electrical Engineer in PCB Design, you need a solid background in electrical engineering principles, circuit analysis, and PCB layout, typically backed by a relevant degree. Expertise with industry-standard design tools like Altium Designer, Eagle, or OrCAD, as well as familiarity with IPC standards and possibly a Professional Engineer (PE) license, is often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with cross-functional teams and ensure design reliability. These skills are crucial for creating efficient, manufacturable, and reliable PCBs that meet safety and performance standards.

What is the difference between Electrical Engineer Pcb Design vs Electrical Engineer Power Systems?

AspectElectrical Engineer Pcb DesignElectrical Engineer Power Systems
CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, certifications in PCB design (e.g., IPC standards)Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering, certifications in power systems (e.g., PE license)
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, electronics manufacturing facilitiesUtility companies, power plants, industrial facilities
Industry UsageConsumer electronics, aerospace, telecommunicationsEnergy, utilities, infrastructure
Job FocusCreating PCB layouts, circuit schematics, ensuring manufacturabilityDesigning power distribution, grid stability, and energy systems

Electrical Engineer Pcb Design focuses on creating printed circuit boards for electronic devices, while Electrical Engineer Power Systems specializes in designing and managing electrical power distribution and infrastructure. Both roles require electrical engineering credentials but differ in industry focus and work environment.

Each day we dedicate ourselves to treating each other, our customers and our community with care and respect.

Summary

The Electrical Engineer will plan, design, execute, and document testing of electronics systems and components. This will include the design of PCB, Design verification & validation, test fixtures, test automation, and safety certification testing. The engineer will be accountable for guiding and developing test strategies and solutions for new products, with a focus on automation, cycle time reduction, and improving product quality.

Key job responsibilities

Role:In this role, Engineer will take ownership of developing electronics systems, test programs, test fixtures, test execution strategies, and test reports for our electronic products and play a critical part in launching new devices. The engineer will act as the technical bridge between design and manufacturing, supporting the operations team by resolving production test issues, performing failure analysis, and ensuring our products meet the highest reliability standards.

Main responsibilities:

  • Production Test Development: Develop, debug, and update Electronics test programs and test fixtures for TDW product lines for day-to-day production.
  • New Product Development: Responsible for the design of PCB circuit boardsand Assemblies. Lead and be actively engaged in Electrical design, design reviews, prototyping, testing, and verification of the product development cycles.
  • PCB and System Design: Lead the PCB and system design process from concept to production. Use ECAD software skills (e.g. Altium Designer) to design PCB and create efficient and reliable multi-layer PCB Schematics and/or layouts.
  • New Product Introduction: Partner with Operations, Suppliers and Quality to define Electronics test plan, strategies and drive test development for new product development.
  • Documentation: Write and maintain comprehensive test procedures, electrical test specifications, and detailed characterization reports.
  • Production Support & Troubleshooting: Troubleshoot hardware and software issues during the testing phase. Collaborate closely with suppliers and manufacturing floor to quickly identify, troubleshoot, and resolve test-related production bottlenecks.
  • Electronics Testing and Troubleshooting: Perform board-level and system-level debugging using oscilloscopes, multimeters, logicanalyzers, power supplies, CAN analyzers, and other laboratory equipment
  • Yield Improvement & Failure Analysis: Analyze test data and yield reports to identify areas for improvement. Propose and implement solutions to enhance testing reliability, increase coverage, and drive down test times. Perform hands-on failure analysis on non-conforming parts.
  • Interface with both local and electrical/firmware team in Norway.
  • Ability to travel domestic and internationally 10 - 15%.
  • Other duties as assigned.
