What is a PCB designer?

A PCB is a printed circuit board. PCBs support electronic components, such as transistors, diodes, and capacitors. A PCB designer uses computer software programs to design the layout for these printed circuit boards, collaborates with engineers to create 3D models of circuit boards, develops PCB design guidelines, and drafts plans for manufacturers. Printed circuit board designers make it possible for people to use computers, television sets, microwaves, and mobile phones.

What are some common challenges PCB designers face when collaborating with hardware engineers and manufacturers?

PCB Designers often need to balance the technical requirements from hardware engineers with the practical constraints set by manufacturers. Challenges can include ensuring that complex circuit layouts meet electrical and mechanical specifications, managing tight deadlines, and adapting designs to fit component availability or fabrication limitations. Effective communication and a proactive approach to design reviews are key to resolving these issues and ensuring a smooth transition from design to production. Building strong relationships with both engineers and manufacturers helps streamline the process and reduces the risk of costly redesigns.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PCB designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a PCB Designer, you need strong proficiency in electronic circuit design, schematic capture, and PCB layout, typically supported by a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with industry-standard tools such as Altium Designer, Eagle, or OrCAD, and knowledge of manufacturing processes and standards are essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills ensure accurate, manufacturable, and reliable PCB designs that meet project requirements and industry regulations.

What is the difference between Pcb Designer vs Pcb Engineer?

AspectPcb DesignerPcb Engineer
ResponsibilitiesDesigns PCB layouts, creates schematics, and prepares manufacturing filesDevelops PCB concepts, tests prototypes, and ensures electrical performance
Required SkillsProficiency in PCB design software, schematic capture, and layout techniquesStrong understanding of electronics, signal integrity, and testing methods
CredentialsAssociate's or Bachelor's in Electronics or Electrical Engineering, PCB design certificationsBachelor's or higher in Electronics Engineering, relevant certifications
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, manufacturing facilitiesDesign labs, testing environments, R&D departments

While both Pcb Designers and Pcb Engineers work closely in PCB development, Pcb Designers focus on creating detailed layouts and preparing files for manufacturing, whereas Pcb Engineers are involved in the overall electrical design, testing, and validation of PCB prototypes. Understanding these distinctions helps in choosing the right career path or job role in electronics manufacturing.

Does PCB design pay well?

PCB designers typically earn competitive salaries that vary based on experience, location, and industry. Skilled designers with proficiency in CAD tools and knowledge of electronics often have higher earning potential, especially in high-demand sectors like aerospace and telecommunications.

How to get a job as a PCB designer?

To become a PCB designer, develop skills in electronic circuit design, learn industry-standard CAD tools such as Altium Designer or Eagle, and gain experience through internships or projects. A relevant degree in electrical engineering or a related field and certifications can improve job prospects.

Job description

Senior Electrical Design Engineer (Technical Lead)About the Team / Our Culture

For more than 80 years, Tektronix has set the benchmark for quality in electronic test and measurement instruments. Our brand is built on engineering excellence, and we take that responsibility seriously. We foster a culture centered on learning, problem-solving, strong teamwork, and operational discipline. Continuous improvement is part of our DNA, and we thrive in a collaborative, mission-driven environment.

At Tektronix, engineers have the opportunity to solve challenging technical problems, influence product direction, and develop technology that enables innovation across industries worldwide. We value technical excellence, ownership, collaboration, and a relentless focus on customer success.

About the Role

We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Electrical Design Engineer to serve as a technical lead for the architecture, design, validation, and delivery of advanced test and measurement systems. This individual will drive key technical decisions, mentor engineers across disciplines, and collaborate closely with systems, FPGA, software, mechanical, manufacturing, and test engineering teams to deliver industry-leading products.

This role requires deep expertise in PCB design, high-speed and mixed-signal circuit design, RF and precision timing systems, and the ability to lead complex technical programs from concept through production. The ideal candidate combines strong technical depth with a demonstrated ability to influence architectural decisions, drive execution, and develop engineering talent.

This role offers the opportunity to shape the architecture of next-generation Tektronix instruments and influence technical direction across multiple engineering disciplines.

What Success Looks Like
  • Lead the architecture, design, implementation, and validation of complex PCB-based hardware systems, including schematic capture, layout direction, bring-up, debug, and production release.
  • Provide technical leadership across the electrical engineering team by coordinating design activities, driving alignment, mentoring engineers, and establishing engineering best practices.
  • Lead system-level electrical architecture development for next-generation instrumentation platforms, making critical tradeoff decisions that balance performance, cost, manufacturability, quality, and schedule.
  • Design high-speed, analog, mixed-signal, RF, and digital circuits with strong focus on signal integrity, power integrity, reliability, and manufacturability.
  • Develop and integrate RF, timebase, and precision timing circuitry, including low‑jitter clocking, synchronization, and frequency-sensitive subsystems.
  • Apply deep understanding of analog signal chains, transmission line theory, impedance control, noise analysis, and precision measurement techniques to solve complex engineering challenges.
  • Lead root‑cause analysis and debug of complex board‑level and subsystem‑level issues using structured engineering methodologies.
  • Drive hardware architecture and technical tradeoffs across performance, cost, schedule, manufacturability, and technical risk.
  • Partner closely with systems, FPGA, software, mechanical, manufacturing, and test engineering teams to define requirements, align technical decisions, and execute successful product deliveries.
  • Lead design reviews, architecture reviews, DFx activities, and continuous improvement initiatives to ensure technical rigor and engineering excellence.
  • Serve as a technical mentor and role model, helping develop engineering talent through coaching, design reviews, technical guidance, and sharing of best practices.
  • Translate customer and market needs into innovative technical solutions that deliver measurable value and differentiation for Tektronix products.
  • Drive execution by developing realistic technical plans, proactively identifying risks, and leading mitigation strategies to achieve predictable product delivery.
  • Actively lead prototype builds of PCBs and instruments, including planning, BOM development, integration, validation, and performance characterization.
