Payments Ops information

What is payments ops?

Payments Ops, short for Payments Operations, refers to the team or function within a company responsible for managing, monitoring, and optimizing the processes involved in financial transactions. This includes handling payment processing, reconciliation, fraud detection, and ensuring compliance with financial regulations. Payments Ops professionals work closely with banks, payment processors, and internal teams to ensure that transactions are completed smoothly and securely. Their goal is to minimize errors, reduce risk, and deliver a seamless payment experience for customers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a payments ops professional?

To thrive as a Payments Ops professional, you need deep knowledge of payment processing, transaction monitoring, and regulatory compliance, often supported by experience in finance or banking. Familiarity with payment platforms, reconciliation tools, and financial software such as SWIFT, ACH, or Oracle Financials is commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for handling high-volume transactions and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders. These skills ensure the accuracy, security, and efficiency of payment operations, which are critical for business reputation and regulatory adherence.

What are some of the typical challenges faced in a payments ops role, and how can I prepare for them?

Payments Ops professionals often encounter challenges such as resolving transaction discrepancies, staying compliant with evolving financial regulations, and managing high transaction volumes under tight deadlines. To prepare, it's helpful to develop strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and familiarity with payment processing systems. Proactively staying informed about industry updates and collaborating closely with compliance, tech, and customer support teams can help you navigate these challenges successfully.

Job description

Payments Product Manager (US, Remote)
Our client, a high-growth consumer subscription company, is hiring a Payments Product Manager to own their payments platform end to end. This is not a greenfield build. You inherit a modern stack - a first-party payments microservice, a payment orchestration layer routing across processors, BNPL, automated dunning, and a self-serve analytics layer - plus a dedicated engineering scrum team. Your job is to push it forward.
Two priorities define the first six months. First, rebill recovery: a meaningful share of subscription rebills fail, and too many of those customers churn for payment reasons, not product reasons. You'll audit the dunning stack, evaluate vendors, and decide whether to optimize, switch, or layer. Second, initial auth rate: routing optimization, network tokenization, express checkout, and continuous experimentation at the checkout layer.
In a given week you'll write a spec, pull your own numbers out of the data warehouse, negotiate a vendor SLA, and present findings to the CFO. There is no payments ops team behind you. When something breaks, you drive resolution. You set the roadmap, you ship, you measure.
Requirements
  • 5+ years in payments product or payments program management, subscription or e-commerce
  • Hands-on experience with payment orchestration platforms and multi-MID routing
  • Dunning and recovery expertise: retry logic, involuntary churn metrics, vendor evaluation
  • Data self-sufficiency in modern BI tools - you don't wait on an analyst
  • Demonstrated AI-native workflow: you actually use LLM and agentic tools in your product work today. This is a minimum qualification, not a preference.
  • Comfortable owning chargebacks, fraud posture, and regulatory compliance context

Benefits
  • Fully remote
  • Unlimited PTO, plus company holidays
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k)
  • HSA and FSA options; Employee Assistance Program
  • Pet insurance and commuter benefits (state specific)
  • Company equipment provided
