Job description

Overview
We are seeking a Patient Sitter, also referred to as a Patient Observer in our Nursing Administration department. The Patient Sitter in our hospital provides continuous one-on-one observation and support to patients who require close monitoring to ensure their safety. Sitters do not perform clinical procedures but play a vital role in patient safety and support, especially for patients with cognitive impairments, delirium, or high fall risk. This position is on a per diem basis, meaning PD/PRN as needed.

** Work under the supervision of a RN, the patient sitter maintains constant visual observation of the assigned patient, assists in ensuring a safe and clean environment, communicates patient activity and behavior regularly to the nurse, interacts professionally and respectfully with patients, families, and healthcare team members, and provides support to peers and staff.
Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (includes, but not limited to):
  • Continuously observes patients who are at risk of harming themselves or others, such as those who are confused, agitated, or medically unstable
  • Ensures patient safety by preventing falls, wandering, or removing medical devices like IV lines or catheters
  • Provides companionship and reassurance to help reduce patient anxiety and agitation
  • Communicates any changes in patient behavior or condition promptly to nursing staff or the healthcare team
  • Assists with non-clinical needs such as helping patients with basic comfort measures or calling for assistance
  • Helps maintain a calm and safe environment for both the patient and staff

Qualifications
Before we go any further, we do have some deal-breakers. You must have:
1. High School Diploma or equivalent.
2. Knowledge of Microsoft Office and basic computer skills.
3. Ability to communicate in English orally and in writing.
4. Within 90 days be eligible to participate in a C.N.A. Training program. (Preferred)
5. BLS (AHA) certification required.
