What you'll do:
The Operations Manager is responsible for leading daily warehouse, yard, inventory, shipping and receiving, and related operational activities to ensure a safe, efficient, organized, and customer-focused operation. This role provides leadership to warehouse and operational employees while coordinating inventory flow, staffing, equipment, facility needs, deliveries, and process improvement initiatives. Working closely with Sales, Purchasing, Transportation, Shop, and branch leadership, the Warehouse Operations Manager ensures materials are received, stored, picked, staged, and delivered accurately while maintaining high standards for safety, inventory control, productivity, and customer service. The ideal candidate is an experienced building materials operations leader with strong problem-solving skills, a hands-on leadership style, and the ability to anticipate operational challenges before they impact customers or the business.
Warehouse & Yard Operations
  • Lead daily warehouse and yard operations to ensure safe, accurate, and efficient material flow
  • Ensure warehouse, yard, loading, staging, and storage areas are prepared for daily business operations
  • Conduct routine operational walkthroughs to verify department readiness, housekeeping, inventory organization, and safety
  • Oversee picking, staging, stocking, receiving, loading, and movement of building materials
  • Coordinate placement of incoming inventory and optimize storage locations to improve workflow and space utilization
  • Ensure warehouse and yard materials remain organized, accessible, properly identified, and in sellable condition
  • Support shipping and receiving activities and resolve operational issues that may affect customer orders

Inventory Management
  • Monitor inventory accuracy and support effective inventory-control processes

  • Coordinate with internal Maintenance teams, vendors, and service providers to minimize equipment downtime
  • Support routine inspections of company vehicles and material-handling equipment
  • Maintain safe, clean, functional, and secure warehouse and facility environments
  • Coordinate building maintenance and general property upkeep
  • Maintain accountability for facility access, company keys, and operational security procedures

Operational Planning & Continuous Improvement
  • Develop, implement, and improve warehouse and operational procedures
  • Identify opportunities to increase productivity, inventory accuracy, safety, and customer satisfaction
  • Establish standardized workflows and operational best practices
  • Monitor operational performance and recommend corrective actions when expectations are not met

Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in warehouse, distribution, operations, building materials, or a related environment
  • Previous leadership or supervisory experience in warehouse or operational environments
  • Experience managing inventory, shipping/receiving, material handling, and warehouse workflow
  • Basic proficiency with computers, inventory systems, and business applications

Preferred Qualifications
  • 10+ years of industry experience preferred
  • Experience within lumber, building materials, construction supply, wholesale distribution, or related industries strongly preferred
  • Experience leading warehouse, yard, shipping/receiving, transportation, or multi-functional operations
  • Knowledge of ERP, WMS, inventory management, and warehouse systems preferred
  • Forklift certification or experience with material-handling equipment preferred
  • Valid driver's license required where operation of company vehicles is necessary
  • CDL or commercial transportation knowledge is a plus

Work Environment & Requirements
