Employer & Industry UsageEmployed by companies or agencies for specific projectsSelf-employed, working with multiple clients
Search & Comparison IntentLooking for part-time design roles or gigsSeeking freelance projects or contract work

Part Time Web Design involves working for an employer on a set schedule, focusing on designing websites, often with a team. Freelance Web Developers work independently, handling coding and development tasks for various clients on a project basis. Both roles require web design or development skills, but differ in work setup and client interaction.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part Time Web Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Web Designer, you need proficiency in HTML, CSS, and basic graphic design, often supported by a relevant degree or portfolio. Familiarity with tools like Adobe Creative Suite, WordPress, and responsive design frameworks is typically required. Strong creativity, time management, and effective communication help you meet client needs and handle multiple projects efficiently. These skills ensure the creation of visually appealing, user-friendly websites that meet client objectives within limited hours.

What is a part time web designer?

A part time web designer is a professional who creates and maintains websites while working fewer hours than a full-time employee, often on a flexible or project-based schedule. Their responsibilities typically include designing website layouts, selecting color schemes, ensuring user-friendly navigation, and sometimes coding with HTML, CSS, or JavaScript. Part time web designers may work for companies, agencies, or as freelancers, allowing for a better work-life balance or the opportunity to pursue other interests or commitments. They play a crucial role in establishing a business’s online presence, even with limited hours.

How do part-time web designers typically balance project deadlines with flexible work hours?

Part-time web designers often need to manage multiple projects with varying deadlines, which requires strong time-management skills and proactive communication. Since work hours can be flexible, it's important to set clear expectations with clients or team members about availability and progress updates. Many part-time designers use project management tools to track tasks and ensure milestones are met, helping them juggle responsibilities without compromising quality. Collaborating remotely with developers, content creators, or clients is common, so maintaining regular check-ins can help prevent miscommunication and keep projects on track.

The Opportunity:
We are looking for a highly skilled Backend Joomla Developer to lead the technical development and optimization of our web platforms. In this role, you will be the architect of our server-side logic, focusing heavily on the creation and customization of Joomla components, modules, and plugins. You will be responsible for managing complex MySQL databases and integrating third-party APIs such as payment gateways and CRMs to ensure our sites are both functional and scalable. Beyond initial builds, you will play a critical role in maintaining site health by performing core updates, implementing security patches, and troubleshooting technical bugs to ensure peak performance.
In this role, you will utilize deep expertise in PHP and Object-Oriented Programming with a comprehensive understanding of the Joomla framework's internal architecture. While your primary focus will be the backend, you should be comfortable working with HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript to ensure seamless integration with the frontend. We are seeking a proactive problem-solver who can translate complex business requirements into robust, high-performance digital solutions.
In this role, you'll work closely with product managers and government leadership to understand mission goals and user requirements. On an agile team, you'll design and deliver large-scale digital experiences that are as intuitive as they are visually refined.
Help our clients meet their mission by supporting national security and empowering government teams with accessible, secure applications.
Join us. The world can't wait.
You Have:
  • 3+ years of experience with an OOP language
  • Experience performing Linux server maintenance, patching, configuration management, or system hardening
  • Experience designing, implementing, and maintaining production-grade AWS environments
  • Experience developing web apps with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
  • Experience with SQL and an RDBMS such as MySQL
  • TS/SCI clearance with a polygraph
  • Bachelor's degree in Systems Administration, Computer Information Systems, or Computer Science and 3+ years of experience with systems administration, or 5+ years of experience with systems administration in lieu of a degree

Nice If You Have:
  • Experience with PHP
  • Experience developing websites using the Joomla CMS
  • Ability to collaborate with government leadership to refine requirements, translate mission needs into UX-focused solutions, and influence design-centered decisions
  • Bachelor's degree in CS, UX, Design, or a related field
  • UX/UI, Accessibility, or Front-End Development Certifications

Clearance:
Applicants selected will be subject to a security investigation and may need to meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information; TS/SCI clearance with polygraph is required.
