Job description

Title: VP of Finance

Location: Baltimore, Maryland. Five days a week in office.

Reports To: Finance committee plus the owner. Works closely with the president of the company on budgets and major financial decisions.

Compensation: $170,000 to $220,000, with flexibility for the right person.

Schedule: Full time, on site.

About the Role

An established insurance services firm is hiring a VP of Finance to lead its internal finance function in Baltimore. Insurance industry experience is not a requirement for this role, though familiarity with the space would be helpful.

This is a hands-on finance leadership role at a firm that is candid about the fact that its organizational structure is still evolving. The person who does well here will be comfortable defining parts of the job as they go.

What You'll Do

  • Own the accuracy of the firm's financial reporting. The buck stops with this person on making sure the numbers are right.
  • Lead a team of two finance and accounting staff based in Baltimore.
  • Partner with the president on budgets, forecasting, and major financial decisions.
  • Manage the outside accounting firm relationship and the firm's third party financial vendors, including payroll through ADP, insurance brokers for commercial, auto, and health coverage, and the 401(k) plan.
  • Report into the firm's finance committee and the owner.
  • Take on progressively broader responsibility as the current CFO transitions to part time and then retires.

What We're Looking For

  • A genuine finance and accounting background. CPA is welcome but not required.
  • Command of financial statements, budgets, and forecasting. Someone who has looked at the financials of many companies and can speak to a balance sheet with authority.
  • Insurance or insurance services background is helpful but not required. Candidates from public accounting, private company finance, or another industry entirely will all be considered.
  • Willingness to work on site in Baltimore five days a week alongside the finance team.
  • Interest in a long term path. This firm is hiring for the next fifteen years, not the next three.
  • Comfort in an environment where process and structure are still being built out.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Base salary of $170,000 to $220,000, with flexibility for an exceptional candidate.
  • Full benefits package.
  • Clear succession path to CFO and the executive committee.
