Mission San Luis, a 64-acre living history museum located in Tallahassee, Florida, is seeking a creative and detail-oriented OPS Museum Education Representative (Wardrobe Manager) to support our educational and public history programs. The perfect candidate will be an integral member of the Mission's team working to produce new wardrobe pieces and maintain existing clothing. The position will be filled as either a full-time or part-time OPS position at the hourly rate of $18 per hour. Candidates for both full-time and part-time are strongly encouraged to apply.

Portfolios should consist images of 1-3 pieces of professional and/or personal work that show understanding of sewing techniques and fabric manipulation. If possible, be prepared to bring in a physical example(s).
Minimum Qualifications:
  • 4 years equivalent experience either through professional work or volunteer experience or
  • Bachelor of Arts in history, theater, fine arts, textiles, or related fields and
  • Minimum one (1) additional year experience in a professional sewing environment such as a costume or tailor shop
  • Cover letter and resume
  • Recent Works Portfolio

Preferences:
  • Minimum two (2) additional years' experience in a professional sewing environment such as a costume or tailor shop
  • Experience working on a sewing machine
  • Experience with hand sewing techniques
  • Interest in clothing and material culture of the mid to late 1600s

Duties:
  • Construct 17th century-style garments using knowledge of historical and modern sewing techniques
  • Consult with the Site Historian/Curator about the construction and style of 17th century-style clothing to ensure wardrobe is accurate, wearable, and representative of daily clothing worn at San Luis in the late 1600s
  • Perform repairs/alterations to all types of garments
  • Oversee the laundering of all wardrobe items
  • Read and interpret historical patterns with little to no direction
  • Measure employees for historical wardrobe
  • Oversee the proper fitting of wardrobe for interpreters
  • Work within the existing Wardrobe Manual to create a pattern portfolio
  • Manage the site's fabric collection and oversee additional purchases
  • Manage and maintain the wardrobe inventory
  • Assists staff in logistics for and execution of public programs and performs other work-related duties as required. Cross trains with other departments to assist front-of-house, gift shop, education department, and rentals team as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of clothing design, construction, and social history
  • Skill with sewing and tailoring skills
  • Understanding of historical clothing terminology
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to design and fabricate a variety of garments
  • Ability to learn complex historical concepts and interpret written, visual, interactive, and oral formats including lesson plans, historic activities, presentations, etc.
  • Proficiency in inventory management and standard office software including Microsoft Office
  • Knowledge of Florida history
  • Knowledge of museum terminology, research, and programs
  • Public speaking skills and willingness to give tours or presentations to large groups of people
  • Excellent customer service skills, ability to maintain a collegial relationship with other team members, and ability to relate to people of all ages and abilities
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team; ability to multi-task, problem-solve, and pay attention to detail
