The Job Description
General Statement of Duties
Performs intermediate, skilled work assisting the Athletic Programs Supervisor and Athletic Coordinator in the operation of basketball, football, kickball and volleyball programs.
Distinguishing Features of the Class
Responsible for assisting the Athletic Programs Supervisor and Athletic Coordinator with the basketball, football, kickball and volleyball programs for the county's Parks and Recreation department. Serves as an official during programs/events as dedicated by the Athletic Program Supervisor. Enforces, manages and oversees sportsmanship, player ejection, player injuries and proper game mechanics during games/competitive situations. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Athletic Programs Supervisor and is evaluated through observation, periodic discussions and public acceptance/feedback.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Tasks
  • Enforces all rules pertaining to basketball, football, kickball and volleyball; maintains order on the court or field during games.
  • Inspects equipment, balls and courts/fields for safety issues.
  • Evaluates effectiveness of the sports programs and recommends changes as appropriate.
  • Reports acts of vandalism to the Athletic Programs Supervisor and/or Athletic Coordinator.
  • Reports complaints, problems and issues to the Athletic Programs Supervisor and/or Athletic Coordinator.
  • Reports safety issue and/or injuries to the Athletic Programs Supervisor and/or Athletic Coordinator.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Athletic Programs Supervisor and/or Athletic Coordinator.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • General knowledge of basketball, football, kickball and volleyball.
  • General knowledge of modern principles and practices of professional recreation work.
  • General knowledge of the techniques and disciplines of impending recreation activities.
  • Ability to assist with implementation of comprehensive sports programs.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with County employees, community agencies and the general public.
  • Ability to communicate ideas effectively, orally and in writing.

Physical Requirements
  • Work requires the exertion of up to 25 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
  • Work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, crouching, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions.
  • Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound.
  • Visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, night vision, peripheral vision, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.
  • Worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.

Desirable Education and Experience
Graduation from high school or equivalent and have considerable experience in recreational and athletic activities; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements
Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license upon hire.
Must be 18 years old or older.
Must be available to work some evenings and weekends.
