What is part time project management?

Part time project management involves overseeing and coordinating projects while working fewer hours than a standard full-time schedule. Part time project managers are responsible for planning, executing, and monitoring projects, but typically manage a smaller workload or number of projects. This role is ideal for organizations with limited project needs or professionals seeking work-life balance. Part time project managers use the same tools and methodologies as their full-time counterparts, ensuring projects are completed on time and within budget. Flexibility and strong communication skills are key to success in this position.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part Time Project Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Project Manager, you need strong organizational, leadership, and time management skills, often supported by a background in business or project management and experience leading teams. Familiarity with project management software like Asana, Trello, or Microsoft Project, and certifications such as PMP or CAPM, are commonly valued. Excellent communication, adaptability, and problem-solving abilities help you effectively coordinate tasks and stakeholders within limited hours. These skills ensure that projects stay on track and objectives are met efficiently, even within a part-time schedule.

How do part-time project managers typically balance multiple projects and communicate effectively with full-time team members?

Part-time project managers often juggle several projects simultaneously, requiring strong organizational skills and proactive communication. They typically rely on clear scheduling, regular status updates, and digital collaboration tools to stay aligned with full-time team members and stakeholders. Establishing set check-in times and leveraging project management software helps ensure everyone stays informed and progress remains on track. Open communication and setting expectations early are key strategies for success in a part-time project management role.

Job description

Job Description:

Position Purpose:

The part-time Project Coordinator provides high-level project management, strategic coordination, and operational infrastructure to launch and sustain a novel, multipronged scholarly program of work at the intersection of the neuroscience of human rights, peacebuilding, and the transformative power of sport. Operating at the cutting edge of cross-disciplinary academic research and global social impact, this role serves as the central operational hub for a complex portfolio of research initiatives, outreach programming, and international collaborations.

The Project Coordinator is responsible for driving project workflows from conception to execution, with input and guidance by the PI. Key responsibilities include managing complex project timelines, coordinating high-profile research activities, planning international symposia and workshops, and managing communications across a diverse network of internal and external stakeholders-including faculty, neuroscientists, human rights advocates, peacebuilding practitioners, sports organizations, and high-level athletes.

Additionally, the position will assist with tracking project deliverables, compiling research progress reports, and managing data and logistics essential to the program's growth. This role requires an entrepreneurial spirit, a background in athletics, knowledge of international law and policy, exceptional organizational acumen, and the ability to navigate a highly interdisciplinary academic environment. The successful candidate will play a foundational role in building the structure, visibility, and global impact of this pioneering program.

This position primarily operates within standard university business hours. However, due to the global scope of the program and the need to coordinate with international stakeholders, occasional early morning or late evening remote meetings may be required to accommodate different time zones.

The Project Coordinator must be available to work occasional evenings and weekends to oversee the operational and logistical execution of high-profile international symposia, workshops, or public outreach events.

Occasional domestic or international travel (approximately 1-2 times per year) may be required to support program initiatives, accompany the PI to key collaborative summits, or coordinate off-site events.

The role involves navigating a fast-paced, highly collaborative academic environment. It requires the ability to multitask effectively under tight deadlines during peak event planning periods while maintaining a high level of diplomatic professionalism.

This is a remote eligible position.

All offers of employment are contingent upon a criminal background check and education verification satisfactory to Brown University.

This is a fixed term position with an end date of 6/30/27, which may be extended based upon available funding.

Job Qualifications and Competencies

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree and 2-5 years of relevant experience in project management, academic administration, international relations, or sports management. Master's Degree preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience Requirement: Demonstrate a background in athletics (e.g., collegiate, professional, or administrative) and professional exposure to or foundational knowledge of international human rights frameworks, peacebuilding initiatives, or public policy.

Job Competencies

  • Proven ability to manage complex project timelines, prioritize shifting workflows, and drive multifaceted academic or operational initiatives from conception to successful execution.
  • Foundational knowledge of international law, human rights frameworks, or global peacebuilding initiatives, combined with a strong understanding of the sports ecosystem (e.g., collegiate athletics, professional leagues, or international sports governance) and its potential for social impact.
  • Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Must possess the nuanced diplomatic ability to engage effectively and respectfully with a highly diverse, international network of neuroscientists, human rights advocates, policymakers, sports executives, and high-level/elite athletes.
  • Demonstrated experience planning and executing high-profile events, symposia, or workshops, including managing international travel logistics, complex itineraries, and vendor relationships.
  • Proficiency with standard office productivity suites (e.g., Google Workspace, Microsoft Office) and digital project management tools. Ability to track expenditures, manage basic project data, and assist with compiling information for grant reporting.
  • Ability to work independently with guidance and input from the PI. Must be comfortable navigating an ambiguous, fast-paced, and highly interdisciplinary academic environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable collaborative environment, in alignment with Brown University's core values and institutional goals.
