The City of Torrance is recruiting for Program Specialists be part of the
Torrance Theater Company Team!
The Department
The Community Services Department offers Torrance residents the unique opportunity to help achieve a sense of purpose, identity, self-worth and improved self-esteem within the specialized areas of Cultural Arts, Library, Parks and Recreation. The Community Services Department is committed to providing quality services, activities, programs and facilities for all those who live, learn, work and play in the City of Torrance.
The Position
Under direction, Program Specialists are generally in charge of a site or a major program. Program Specialists assist in planning, directing and implementing program activities and lead and supervise recurrent staff and participants. This is a recurrent, part-time, non-civil service, as needed position.
Program Specialists assigned to the Torrance Theatre Company will need to be available at peak times to assist with program logistics. Staff will assist with various production elements including creating sets, procuring/making props, marketing, social media, administrative work, and box office.
Hours: Hours will vary week to week based on the needs of the Torrance Theatre. This position is expected to work weekdays, some evenings, and weekends to cover performances as needed.
QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES
Education and Experience
Any combination of education and experience that would have provided the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:
Graduation from High School or equivalent and one year of recent part-time work experience directly related to recreation or community programs and services. Some positions may require specific experience in a field such as: fine or performing arts, sports, preschool, therapeutic recreation, senior citizens, parks or science programs. An Associate's degree in a related field is desirable.
License and/or Certificates
Negative tuberculin test.
Some positions may require the following certifications: A valid California Class C Driver's License. Certification in Red Cross or American Heart Association Basic Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is desirable.
Ideal Candidate
In addition to the minimum qualifications, the ideal candidate for will possess:
  • Ability to effectively work with others;
  • Skills in instructing, training, and evaluating staff;
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with participants, staff and supervisors;
  • Effective oral and written communication skills;
  • Ability to comply with and enforce Departmental, Divisional and Program policies and procedures;
  • Experience in marketing on social media platforms, with photography, video and/or graphic design (Canva, etc); and
  • Knowledge of basic scenic construction, scenic painting, design, or sound design for theater (QLab) and experience with box Office software (Easy Ware) is preferred.

Performance of the essential duties of this position includes the following physical demands and/or working conditions:
Work is typically performed at indoor and outdoor program sites in seasonal weather conditions. Work may require exposure to noise, dust and dirt. Physical demands may include bending, kneeling, squatting, sitting, running and climbing. May lift or move up to 50 pounds with assistance. Positions may be required to wear a uniform and employee identification badge.
The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet while in the office, and moderately loud when in the field.
