Job description

Piano Instructor

Primary Purpose

The Piano Instructoris responsible forplanning and delivering engaging, age-appropriate piano instruction for students as young as 3 years old through high school. The instructor will work with a wide range of developmental stages and skill levels, fostering musical foundations, technicalproficiency, creativity, and confidence. Instruction should support individual student growth whilemaintaininga positive, inclusive, and developmentallyappropriate learningenvironment aligned with the mission and values of the Fine Arts Association.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement structured and developmentallyappropriate lessonplans for piano students ages 3 through high school.

  • Teach foundational through advanced piano techniques, including posture, hand position, finger strength, coordination, rhythm, sight-reading, and repertoire development.

  • Adapt instructional methods and materials to meet a wide range of developmental stages, learning styles, and skill levels.

  • Introduce early childhood students (ages 3-5) to foundational musical concepts through play-based and movement-integrated instruction.

  • Instruct older and advanced students in technique refinement, music theory, expression, and performance preparation.

  • Foster a supportive and encouraging environment that promotes confidence, discipline, creativity, and musical enjoyment.

  • Provide individualized instruction, feedback, and guidance to support student progress and goal achievement.

  • Prepare lesson plans, organize instructional materials, andmaintainan orderly and effective teaching environment.

  • Supervise students during lessons, recitals, workshops, performances, andspecial eventsas applicable.

  • Maintain awareness of student safety andappropriate useof instruments and classroom materials.

  • Maintain attendance records, lesson documentation, and student progress reports as required by the Fine Arts Association.

  • Assistwith preparation and participation in student performances, recitals, and community events.

  • Communicate effectively with students and familiesregardingprogress, expectations, and scheduling.

  • Participate in staff meetings,trainings, and professional development opportunities as requested.

  • Support the mission, values, policies, and procedures of the Fine Arts Association.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Music, Piano Performance, Music Education, Early Childhood Music Education, or a closely related field preferred.

  • Demonstratedproficiencyin piano performance and pedagogy.

  • Experience teaching piano to early childhood students (ages 3-5) strongly preferred.

  • Ability to effectively instruct students across a wide developmental and skill range (beginner through advanced).

  • Strong understanding of music theory, technique, and performance practices.

  • Experience working with children and adolescents in educational or instructional settings preferred.

  • Strong classroom management, organizational, and communication skills.

  • Ability to create engaging, age-appropriate, and developmentally responsive lessons.

  • Commitment to fostering an inclusive, supportive, and student-centered learning environment.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, students, and families.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit at a piano and instruct for extended periods.

  • Ability todemonstratepiano technique andprovideappropriate physical guidance (e.g., posture, hand position) when necessary.

  • Ability to lift, carry, and organize instructional materials, books, and equipment (up to approximately 25 pounds).

  • Manual dexterity sufficient todemonstratepiano technique and guide student hand positioning.

  • Visual and auditory acuity sufficient to read music, assess performance accuracy, andmonitorstudent engagement and safety.

  • Ability to engage in physical activity consistent with early childhood instructional methods (e.g., movement-based learning for ages 3-5).

  • Work is performed in classroom, studio, and performance settings.

  • Exposure to moderate noise levels associated with group instruction and events.

Terms of Employment

  • Part-time position.

  • Schedule will vary based on student enrollment, instructional demand, and program needs.

  • Instructionmay occur during daytime, evening, and/or weekend hours.

  • Instructoris responsible foractively developing,maintaining, and managing their own student base, including the acquisition and retention of private piano clients, consistent with the independent studio model of the Fine Arts Association.

  • Employment is contingent upon successful background check and verification of credentials.
