Job description

Job Title: Part-Time Fixed Route Operator
Starting Pay: $24.06/hour
FLSA: Non-exempt
Positions Available: 10 part-time openings
Hours: Up to 28 hours per week

Position Overview
Part-Time Fixed Route Operators are responsible for safely operating MATA coaches or vans on designated routes and schedules. This position plays a key role in maintaining reliable and courteous transit service for passengers throughout Memphis and Shelby County.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Safely operate MATA vehicles on assigned routes and schedules.
  • Provide assistance to passengers, including those with disabilities or mobility challenges.
  • Operate a two-way radio to communicate with dispatch regarding route changes, incidents, or emergencies.
  • Collect fares, distribute transfers, and operate the onboard fare system.
  • Complete and submit required reports and documentation.
  • Ensure passenger safety and adherence to MATA policies and procedures.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be a retiree or former MATA Fixed Route Operator who left in good standing.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Valid Class CDL Driver's License with P-endorsement, with a clean driving record (no suspensions or revocations within the last five years).
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
  • Must comply with MATA's Drug and Alcohol Policy and pass all required screenings.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
Work Schedule
  • Part-time only: up to 28 hours per week.
  • May include weekends, holidays, and split shifts depending on service needs.
Work Environment
  • Primary duties involve driving and assisting passengers.
  • Exposure to weather, traffic, noise, and engine fumes.
  • May lift or push up to 50 lbs. and assist passengers using mobility devices.
