What are part time medical billing jobs?

Part time medical billing jobs involve processing and submitting healthcare claims to insurance companies, government agencies, or patients on a part-time basis. These roles typically include verifying patient information, coding medical procedures, and following up on unpaid claims. Part time positions may be offered in hospitals, clinics, private practices, or remotely, and usually require attention to detail and knowledge of billing software and medical terminology. Working part time allows for flexible hours, which can be ideal for students, parents, or those seeking supplemental income.

Can I work from home in medical billing?

Part time medical billing jobs often offer remote work options, allowing billers to perform tasks such as coding, claims submission, and patient data management from home. Employers may require familiarity with billing software, electronic health records, and relevant certifications, and some positions may have specific schedule or equipment requirements.

Is it hard to get hired as a medical biller?

Getting hired as a part-time medical biller generally requires relevant knowledge of medical coding and billing software, along with attention to detail. While some employers prefer candidates with certification or prior experience, entry-level positions are often available, making the job accessible to those willing to learn. Competition can vary based on location and demand, but strong organizational skills improve hiring prospects.

What is the highest paying medical billing job?

The highest paying medical billing roles are often senior or specialized positions such as Medical Billing Managers or Coding Directors, which require extensive experience and certifications like CPC or CCS. These roles typically offer higher salaries due to increased responsibilities and expertise in revenue cycle management and coding accuracy.

Can you do medical billing as a side job?

Medical billing is a flexible job that can often be done part-time or as a side job, especially if performed remotely using billing software and electronic health records. Many professionals take on freelance or part-time medical billing roles to supplement their income, provided they have the necessary certifications and time management skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part Time Medical Billing Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Medical Billing Specialist, you need a solid understanding of medical terminology, coding systems like ICD-10 and CPT, and basic accounting or bookkeeping skills, often supported by a certificate or relevant experience. Familiarity with medical billing software (such as Kareo or AdvancedMD), electronic health records (EHRs), and insurance claim processing systems is typically required. Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to communicate effectively with healthcare providers and insurance companies set top performers apart. These skills are crucial for ensuring accurate billing, timely reimbursements, and compliance with healthcare regulations.

What are some common challenges faced in a part-time medical billing role, and how can they be managed?

Part-time medical billing professionals often face challenges such as keeping up with frequent updates to insurance policies, managing time effectively to meet billing deadlines, and ensuring accuracy despite working fewer hours. Staying organized and maintaining clear communication with the rest of the billing team can help mitigate these challenges. Additionally, making use of up-to-date billing software and regularly reviewing industry guidelines will support accuracy and efficiency in the role.

Job description

Urgent Care Front Desk Insurance & Billing SUPERHERO WANTED! (Guaranteed at least 36 Hours Per Week)

Help Us Keep Life Uninterrupted!

At American Family Care, we're not just treating patients – we're revolutionizing how people access healthcare. As the nation's leading urgent care provider with over 400 clinics across 26 states, we're looking for a detail-oriented Medical Receptionist to be the face of our clinic and the first step in our patient-first approach.

At American Family Care, our Part-Time Medical Receptionists keep our urgent care centers running smoothly. In this role, you will be committing to working approximately 15 to 20 hours per week.

Why You’ll Love Working Part-Time at AFC

  • Competitive pay, plus shift differentials may apply.
  • Collaborative, supportive, fast-paced team environment.
  • Ability to maintain clinical skills while balancing other work, school, or family commitments.
  • Make a meaningful impact on patient care and community health.

Why Your Insurance Verification Skills Matter Most

You're not just answering phones – you're our revenue protection specialist and patient financial counselor. As our front desk receptionist, your precision with insurance verification directly impacts both patient experience AND our clinic's financial health. We're specifically looking for someone who excels at resolving insurance and billing challenges while maintaining high patient satisfaction.

Let's be direct: We need someone exceptional at insurance verification and revenue recovery. Your ability to accurately verify coverage, explain costs clearly to patients, and ensure clean claims will be your most valuable contribution.

What You'll Actually Do

  • Master Insurance Verification: Meticulously verify coverage BEFORE services are provided, prevent claim denials, and maximize revenue capture
  • Excel at Financial Counseling: Confidently explain costs, billing processes, and insurance complexities to patients in a way they understand
  • Solve Billing Problems: Proactively identify and resolve insurance discrepancies and billing issues before they impact revenue
  • Drive Patient Satisfaction: Deliver exceptional service even during difficult financial conversations - keeping patients happy while handling payment matters
  • Be the Face of AFC: Greet patients with the warmth and professionalism that makes AFC stand out in healthcare
  • Own the Front Desk Flow: Process payments, schedule appointments, and manage patient check-ins with lightning efficiency
  • Protect Patient Information: Maintain organized records while strictly following HIPAA regulations

This Role is Perfect for You If:

  • You have experience with insurance verification and medical billing (non-negotiable!).
  • You can explain complex insurance concepts to frustrated patients with empathy and clarity.
  • You're obsessively detail-oriented – a single digit error in an insurance ID can cost thousands.
  • You've worked as a Medical Receptionist, Administrative Assistant, or in any Customer Service role in a medical office setting.
  • You're tech-savvy with medical billing software and EMR systems.
  • You have excellent problem-solving skills and can find billing solutions that work for both patients and the clinic.
  • You maintain a positive attitude even when dealing with challenging financial conversations.

What's In It For You:

  • Develop highly marketable skills in medical billing and insurance - some of the most in-demand talents in healthcare.
  • Receive specialized training in insurance verification and patient financial counseling.
  • Make a dual impact: help patients navigate healthcare costs while ensuring our clinic remains financially healthy.
  • Build transferable clerical and revenue cycle management skills that are valuable across the healthcare industry.
  • Be part of healthcare innovation that's expanding nationwide.
  • Clear Career Path: Grow with AFC into roles like Billing Specialist, Revenue Cycle Analyst, or Front Desk Supervisor — or move into clinic leadership and management as we continue expanding to 500+ locations.

The Details:

  • Location: Our state-of-the-art urgent care facility
  • Schedule: Part-Time with flexible shifts (some evenings/weekends)
  • Requirements:
    • High school diploma preferred; X-Ray Tech, Medical Assistant or related certification is a plus
    • Active BLS certification required or must be obtained within defined onboarding period.

We invest in your well-being so you can bring your best self to work—every shift, every patient.

Actual compensation may vary based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to relevant experience, skills, education, certifications, internal equity, and market conditions.
