Job description

Great Lakes Academy is hiring a full or part time Literacy Coach to join the team.

Great Lakes Academy is a K - 8th grade public charter school located in Pontiac. The academy has been serving the community for more than 20 years. Great Lakes Academy is built around the shared vision of educating children in a safe and nurturing environment. Qualification Required:

● Valid Michigan Teaching license and elementary certification required. ∙ Master’s Degree with Reading Specialist, K-8 endorsement (preferred) or willingness to pursue Reading Specialist endorsement within three years.

● Five years teaching experience.

● Extensive knowledge of the content and methodology of comprehensive reading and writing instruction, literacy development and adult learning theory.

● Experience using assessment results to shape instruction.

● Knowledge of successful techniques for classroom organization and experience planning for effective literacy instruction.

● Ability to share proven instructional approaches with teachers and administrators and interpersonal skills to provide advice and coaching.

● Strong organizational skills, strategic planning skills and efficiency in meeting deadlines.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Literacy Coach will support K-8 teachers in the implementation of all elements of the District’s Comprehensive Reading / Language Arts Program. The Coach will work directly with teachers in school to provide classroom demonstrations in rigorous standards based teaching. He/she will provide collaborative and one-on-one instructional coaching and will facilitate teacher inquiry and related professional development. The Coach will work with administrators and teachers to align their work with district priorities. He/she will lead data sessions that look at both formative and summative assessment results and suggest and monitor intervention strategies and materials for struggling students. The Coach will focus on enhancing teachers’ abilities to provide instruction that builds students’ literacy skills, is academically rigorous, addresses the curriculum standards and enhances students’ engagement and ownership of their learning. In addition as a member of a professional coaching community, the Literacy Coach will participate in professional development and inquiry into his or her own practice.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/JOB DUTIES

● Model research-based instructional approaches, aligned to the District’s primary curriculum resources, and collaborate with the teacher to determine those approaches that best meet the students’ needs.

● Observe the teacher as he/she implements changes in instructional approaches and provide feedback to the teacher.

● Provide student intervention supports as needed.

● Provide ongoing professional development to teachers in a school-based setting.

● Assist teachers in aligning their teaching with appropriate standards, curriculum and assessments.

● Provide assessment support to teachers through collaborative analysis of student work and formal and informal assessments.

● Serve as a resource to literacy educators.

● Monitor the progress of struggling students and offer suggestions for intervention to meet students’ reading needs.

● Facilitate inquiry groups among teachers where current research and writing on effective literacy practice is read and discussed.

● Support administrators and leadership team in the creation of the school’s professional development plan with specific, measurable and attainable benchmarks for teacher and student performance.

● Participate fully in professional development for coaches, including peer observations, professional research and reading, and inquiry sessions.
