Job description

The Northville District Library seeks an enthusiastic and customer-service oriented candidate for a part-time position in the Library's Circulation Services Department.

Position Overview:


  • Hours: Part-time; Nights and weekends are a must.
  • Classification: Non-union Substitute position.
  • Compensation: $13.75

Essential Duties:

  • Public Service: Provide positive, pleasant, and professional assistance to patrons at the Circulation Desk, including issuing library cards, handling monetary transactions, and resolving conflicts gracefully. Willingness to coordinate with both leadership and colleagues to ensure the delivery of accurate information and resources.
  • Patron Support: Answer incoming calls and direct patrons to the appropriate service areas.
  • Material Management: Accurately check materials in and out, sort delivery items, and process interlibrary loan requests. Inspect incoming items for damage or missing parts and take appropriate action.
  • Database Maintenance: Assist with library account management, database updates, and special departmental projects.
  • Physical Operations: Lift, carry, and push carts of books and materials up to 40 lbs; stand, sit, or walk for extended periods; and comfortably bend, reach, or stoop to manage inventory.

Required Qualifications:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Communication: Excellent interpersonal skills with a strong orientation toward public service.
  • Technical Aptitude: Proficiency with computers (Windows OS), cash registers, credit card terminals, and standard office equipment.
  • Core Competencies: Strong critical thinking skills, high attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a cohesive team.
