How much do part time law professor jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 17, 2026, the average yearly pay for part time law professor in the United States is $80,057.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $60,000.00 and $91,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time law professor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Law Professor, you typically need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, substantial legal experience, and a strong understanding of legal theory and practice. Familiarity with online learning platforms, legal research databases, and grading or learning management systems is usually required. Exceptional communication, mentorship, and organizational skills help foster student engagement and effectively manage teaching responsibilities alongside other commitments. These skills and qualities are vital for delivering quality legal education, supporting student success, and balancing the demands of part-time teaching.

What are some common challenges faced by part time law professors in balancing teaching responsibilities with other professional commitments?

Part-time law professors often juggle teaching with their primary legal practice or other professional roles, which can make time management a significant challenge. They must balance course preparation, grading, and student engagement with the demands of their legal careers. Additionally, part-time faculty may have less access to institutional resources or may need to adapt quickly to varying academic cultures. However, many find the role rewarding, as it allows them to share real-world experience and stay connected to legal education without a full-time commitment.

What is a part time law professor?

Part-time law professors, often referred to as adjunct professors, are legal professionals who teach law courses at universities or law schools on a part-time basis. They typically have primary careers outside of academia, such as practicing attorneys, judges, or legal consultants, and bring real-world experience to the classroom. Part-time law professors usually teach one or two courses per semester and may not have the same research or administrative responsibilities as full-time faculty. Their flexible roles allow academic institutions to offer specialized legal courses and students to benefit from instructors with current, practical knowledge of the law.
