Job description

Job Description The Animal Care Technician is responsible for providing daily care, handling, and humane treatment of animals housed within the City's animal care facility. This position plays a critical role in ensuring animal health, safety, and welfare while supporting public-facing animal services operations. Duties include feeding, cleaning, monitoring animal health and behavior, assisting with medical and adoption processes, and maintaining sanitary and safe facility conditions.

The Animal Care Technician interacts regularly with the public, volunteers, and other staff to promote responsible pet ownership, animal welfare standards, and compliance with applicable laws and regulations. This role requires compassion for animals, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, emotionally demanding environment. Duties and responsibilities may be modified at any time to meet the needs of the organization.

Job Functions Provide daily care for animals, including feeding, watering, enrichment, and behavior modification. Clean and sanitize kennels, cages, work areas, and equipment in accordance with established health and safety protocols. Assist with animal intake which may include, physical exams, blood draw, administering vaccines, or running diagnostic testing.

Observe animals and document signs of illness, injury, or behavioral concerns according to shelter procedures. Humanely handle all animals using Fear Free procedures and positive reinforcement techniques as trained. This includes animals which may be ill, injured, quarantined, or aggressive while utilizing established animal care and control equipment and techniques.

Assist with adoption processes, including animal presentation and basic information sharing with the public. Support vaccination, medication administration, and basic medical care as directed by veterinary or supervisory staff. Maintain accurate records related to animal health, feeding, medications, behavior and daily activities.

Provide courteous and professional customer service to the public, volunteers, and partner organizations. Follow all safety procedures, infection control standards, and animal welfare regulations. Perform all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications Minimum Required Qualifications High school diploma or GED. Previous experience working with animals in a shelter, kennel, veterinary clinic, or similar environment preferred; relevant experience may be considered in lieu of formal education. Ability to safely handle animals of various sizes, temperaments, and health conditions.

Valid Texas driver's license with an acceptable driving record. Preferred Qualifications One (1) or more years of experience in animal care, animal shelter operations, or veterinary assistance. Knowledge of basic animal health indicators and humane handling techniques.

Experience working with the public in a customer service environment.
