Job description

PART TIME WILDERNESS SKILLS INSTRUCTOR/DAY CAMP INSTRUCTOR
Weeks available for work:
June 15 shadow week
June 22
July 6
July 13
July 20
August 3
Sub days and filling in as able
For you:
  • $19.00 to $24.50 - DOE
  • Outside with kids
  • Working a variety of camp content and ages
  • Learn and Teach Bushcraft and Survival Skills to kids age 6 to 14
  • Join a team from multiple states and connect with a larger summer camp and bushcraft community
  • Increase your experience in outdoors work
  • Increase your experience with outdoor experiential education

Requirements:
  • Ability to work effectively and dynamically with young people aged 6 - 14
  • Outdoor skills with bushcraft, survival, outdoor recreation, etc... (background preferred but need not be 'expert')
  • Deliver outdoor skill content curriculum confidently and effectively
  • Ability to work independently and communicate as a team member
  • Maintain and administer an organized camp & follow curriculum
  • Willing and able to drive to work sites that may be at various locations
  • PT set schedule by April/May and must maintain agreed upon availability
  • FT must be able to commit to full summer work from early June through end of August
  • All instructors are background checked.

The Daily Work:
  • 40 and 32.5 hour work weeks (day camp only), occasional filling in for partial weeks.
  • Lead and teach groups of kids outdoor and survival skills including: shelter, knots, knives, fire, navigation, foraging, cordage, fishing, hunting, archery etc.
  • A full day of making a difference for others and being engaging.
  • Work autonomously and interact with parents and public at site locations.
  • Manage safety, curriculum, and behavior during programming with groups of 6-9 years old or 9-14 years old.
  • A typical week is working from 8:30-4:30 in a municipal or county park setting, M-F.

We don't put safety first at Coyle Outside. That is said with trepidation as it seems our culture, especially around kids, increasingly values safety above all else sometimes. That leaves things like good judgement, relationship, trust, connection to come AFTER. What we see is that the world kids grow up in is increasingly sanitized of adversity and opportunities to experience failure/victory and to experience themselves as potential difference makers. We believe there is a distinction between discovery and 'learning' and that discovery changes a person forever. Our instructor team is expected to develop themselves as guides and mentors for our participants while also developing strong working relationships with co instructors that build a strong culture and keep standards high.
Many, if not most, of our programs have been the brainchild of or inspired by the initiative and talent of individual instructors whether that be our fishing and archery camps or our expansion to new states. Our instructors are self sufficient, autonomous and adventurous OR they are committed to developing themselves in these ways. The work is challenging and rewarding and instructors are at the same time highly independent and part of a larger culture.
We provide training in instruction approach, group and behavior management and technical outdoor skills. Our instructors work largely autonomously and with limited supervision and are confident and ready to be responsible. All instructors are on a first name basis with the founder/owner.
