Job Description / Essential Elements: Print GLENDALE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT EDUCATION ASSISTANT CLASSROOM AND AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS DEFINITION Performs a variety of instructional and support tasks assisting teachers and staff in classroom settings and in before- and after-school programs operated by the Child Development and Child Care (CDCC) Department.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS An Education Assistant - Classroom and Afterschool Programs works under the close supervision of a classroom teacher or a CDCC teacher, head teacher, or site leader and within a framework of established procedures, provides instructional assistance, student supervision, and program support in classroom and CDCC settings. SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED Immediate supervision is provided by a classroom teacher or a CDCC teacher, head teacher or site leader. No supervision is exercised over District personnel.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES Assists students with academic tasks such as reading, writing, math, and other instructional activities. Provides individual and small group supervision and support under the direction of certificated staff. Assists in preparing and organizing instructional and enrichment activities in both classroom and afterschool settings.

Supervises students during activities, meals, recreational time, and field trips. Assists in setting up and cleaning up classroom or program spaces. Supports students with special needs, including those with learning or behavioral challenges, under the direction of a specialist.

Prepares materials for displays, activities, and instructional use. Administers, scores, and records student work and assessments as directed. Performs related clerical duties including maintaining student files and operating audiovisual and office equipment.

Assists in serving meals and snacks and supports routines such as napping (when applicable in early education or CDCC settings). Performs related work as required. CLASS QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: Student needs and behavioral characteristics.

Basic principles of child development. Classroom and afterschool program procedures. English usage, grammar, and spelling.

Record keeping methods and office equipment operation. Ability to: Assist in implementing instructional and activity plans. Supervise and support students in both academic and recreational settings.

Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships. Learn and work within the framework and requirements of the program to which assigned. Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Maintain confidentiality and professional conduct. Address groups of students and be heard and understood outdoors. Demonstrate or reinforce instructions for games, and other educational activities, indoors or outdoors.

Stand for prolonged periods of time while observing, demonstrating or reinforcing educational activities. EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS Minimum Requirements: None. Desirable: Coursework related to student instruction, early childhood education, or child development.
