What is a part time developer?

A part time developer is a software professional who works fewer hours than a full-time employee, typically on a contract or hourly basis. They may be responsible for writing code, debugging, testing, and maintaining applications, but their schedule is more flexible and limited compared to full-time developers. Part time developers are often hired by companies that need specialized skills or want to complete specific projects without committing to a full-time hire. This arrangement allows both employers and developers to have flexibility in work schedules and commitments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Developer, you need strong programming skills, a solid understanding of software development principles, and often a degree or relevant experience in computer science. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, common frameworks (such as React or Django), and cloud platforms is typically expected. Excellent time management, communication, and the ability to quickly adapt to new tasks make someone stand out in this flexible role. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering high-quality code efficiently and collaborating effectively, even with limited hours or shifting project requirements.

How do part-time developers typically manage collaboration and communication with full-time team members?

Part-time developers often coordinate closely with full-time colleagues through scheduled check-ins, project management tools, and clear documentation to maintain alignment despite differing work hours. Many teams use asynchronous communication platforms like Slack or project boards such as Jira to ensure everyone stays updated on progress and blockers. Being proactive about sharing updates and clarifying expectations helps part-time developers integrate smoothly, contribute effectively, and avoid misunderstandings. This structure allows part-time developers to remain engaged and productive while balancing their flexible schedules.

Job description

Manufacturing Engineer - Aerospace & Defense Shape What Gets Built. Own What You Help Create.
Engineer the Future. Own a Piece of It.
At GTC, manufacturing engineers don't just sit behind a desk reviewing documents - they're in the middle of the action, influencing how defense and aerospace products come to life from the very first quote to the finished part. If you want your fingerprints on work that actually matters, this is where you belong.
And through our Ownership For All program, your contribution doesn't just benefit the company - it benefits you directly. Every eligible full-time employee receives an ownership stake in GTC. From day one, you're not just joining a team. You're becoming an owner. Your wins here are your wins everywhere.
Retirees, we haven't forgotten you - part-time schedules with a benefits package are available.
What You'll Do
You'll be the connective tissue between customer requirements and shop floor execution. When a customer solicitation comes in, you're one of the first people on it - reviewing requests for quotes, sharpening your understanding of what the customer actually needs, and making sure the manufacturing and production control teams have everything they need to deliver.
From there, you'll design cost-effective routing through the shop, build out routers that get tools and materials moving efficiently, and look for every opportunity to expedite product without sacrificing quality. When machinists and fabricators hit a wall, they'll come to you - and you'll have answers. You'll identify fixturing and special tooling needs, troubleshoot process challenges, and provide the kind of technical guidance that keeps the floor moving and the customer happy.
This isn't a siloed role. You'll build real working relationships across every department, share your knowledge freely, and bring a genuinely collaborative energy to everything you do.
What You Bring
A high school diploma or GED is required, but what really sets you apart is deep, hands-on experience in an engineering role where you've built things - through CNC machining or advanced fabrication. Aerospace or defense background puts you at the front of the line.
You have a working command of GD&T and blueprint reading. You solve problems methodically and communicate clearly with everyone from the shop floor to the front office. You're the kind of engineer who doesn't wait to be asked - you see a gap and you close it.
Why GTC
Meaningful work in defense and aerospace manufacturing. A culture where engineers are respected, heard, and empowered to make real decisions. And through Ownership For All, a genuine stake in the company you're helping to build. You're not just an employee here - you're an owner.
GTC is an Equal Opportunity Employer M/F/D/V. All applicants are considered based on experience and knowledge, without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, ancestry, marital status, disability, or veteran status. We are committed to a workplace free from discrimination and harassment.
