The City of Kettering's Police Department is currently seeking a Regular Part-Time Redaction Specialist.
You will have the opportunity to:

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
The Redaction Specialist is responsible for reviewing and assessing reports, photos, videos, written and audio content, and accurately redacting relevant material from the requested file using redaction software or other methods. The role involves frequent exposure to negative or distressing auditory and visual content. Work must be completed promptly, requiring independent judgment and initiative, while maintaining confidentiality. This position is mainly sedentary, but may involve some walking, standing, bending, and light lifting of items such as papers, books, and equipment.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE POSITION:
This is a responsible position involving complex and varied work and the Redaction Specialist must exercise good judgment in the application of prescribed procedures and methods used in moderately complex matters. The work may be done under general supervision or may require independent judgment and action. This is a civilian position which is under the immediate supervision of the Support Services Lieutenant. This position is in the non-competitive classified Civil Service.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Illustrative Only)
  • Performs redaction of reports, photos, videos, and audio recordings as required under the Ohio Public Records Act;
  • Assists in responding to public records requests;
  • Operates necessary software for redaction;
  • Performs records research;

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Thorough knowledge of federal, state, and local rules and regulations, public records law, policies and procedures governing public records and the ability to interpret and apply these related to the release or non-release of information on requests. Knowledge of police systems for redaction editing. Excellent computer knowledge and experience. Ability to analyze, appraise, and organize documents. Ability to complete assignments on time. Excellent time management skills. Also included is the ability to understand and follow complex oral and written directions; ability to maintain complex records and prepare reports from such records; ability to make minor decisions in accordance with laws, ordinances, regulations and established policies. Clerical aptitude, the ability to handle confidential reports, accuracy in work, good judgment, tact and courtesy are essential, along with the ability to deal effectively and professionally with the general public and city staff.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Graduation from high school or its equivalent required; knowledge of redaction software; experience in computer data entry and use of business machines; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.

The City partners with Superior Dental Care to provide dental coverage for employees and eligible dependents (legal spouse and children under age 26).
Superior Dental Care offers the same level of coverage for both in-network and out-of-network providers. However, out-of-network providers may balance bill, while in-network providers may not. To minimize out-of-pocket costs, employees are encouraged to use in-network providers.

An employee who is age 40 elects $100,000 in voluntary employee life insurance coverage.
  • Rate for age 40-44: $1.60 per $10,000

Retirement Plan
In lieu of Social Security contributions, employees (excluding Patrol Officers and Firefighters) make contributions to the Ohio Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS).
  • Employee contribution: 10.0% of gross salary
  • City contribution: 14.0% of gross salary

New members are given 180-days to elect participation in one of two plan selections within OPERS. Information from OPERS regarding plan selection will be mailed to your home address. Additional information can be obtained by calling OPERS at 800.222.7377 or by visiting www.opers.org.
In addition, employees may voluntarily contribute to a Deferred Compensation Plan through MissionSquare or Ohio Deferred Compensation. These plans allow employees to save additional funds for retirement through pre-tax payroll deductions.

Vacation Leave
Vacation leave accrues based on length of service.Regular Part-Time employees accrue Vacation Leave at the same rate as regular Full-Time employees; however, such leave is prorated on actual hours worked. For example, an employee who is in the first category that accrues 10 days per year and is working five four-hour days would accrue ten four-hour days; an employee working five six-hour days would accrue ten six-hour days.

Eligible prior Ohio public service sick leave may be transferred.
Birthing Parent and Bonding/Non-Birthing Parent and Bonding/Adoption Leave
Birthing parent and bonding leave may be granted with full pay and benefits during the period of pregnancy-related disability and charged to sick leave as appropriate. Additional leave may be available under other leave policies. In certain circumstances, the provisions of the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) may apply. Similar benefits may apply to non-birthing parents and adoptive or foster placements.
Funeral Leave
  • Up to 5 days for spouse, child, stepchild, parent, or parent-in-law
