Job description

The Position The Library Services Department is responsible for providing professional library services to meet the educational, cultural, and information needs of the residents of San Leandro. The Library is seeking candidates with excellent interpersonal and customer service skills. This position is assigned as a Library Aide to the circulation department will perform a variety of library operational support tasks which may include filing, copying, sorting and organizing materials, and shelving books The Library Aide position is part-time working about 10 hours per week.

Shifts include mornings, afternoons, and evenings. This position also requires weekend shifts on Saturday. Duties and Responsibilities SUPERVISION EXERCISED AND RECEIVED This class has no supervisory responsibility.

Receives general supervision from assigned higher-level departmental staff. Examples of Typical Job Functions The typical job functions of the classification may include, but are not limited to, the functions below and are subject to changes in operational necessity. Greets and/or responds to the public, providing basic information and instruction; directs patrons to library self-service options such as self-checkout machines, catalog stations, and kiosks; and answers patrons' basic location questions for materials and services referring patrons to appropriate staff for more complex questions or service needs.

Shelves books and other library materials according to the library's classification system. Maintains proper order and neatness of the library public areas; tidying chairs, tables, computer stations, and furniture, and arranges materials, shelves, and display fixtures to maximize browse-ability. Assists with the picking up and delivering of materials and supplies.

Collects materials from book-drop and retrieves materials for use from public and non-public areas. Checks work email for organizational, procedural, and policy updates. Assists in the collection of monies for various City goods and services.

Sets up and takes down audio-visual equipment, tables and chairs for meetings, programming, and social events; cleans, removes debris, and restores to original condition upon conclusion of use. Reports all identified issues related to improper functioning or condition of items, equipment, and/or facilities to senior staff; assists in resolving issues. Qualifications EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION GUIDELINES Any combination equivalent to experience and education that would most likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Education: High school diploma or certified equivalent (GED) is desired. Experience: Some experience performing general clerical duties.
