POSITION SUMMARY:

Successfully promote and support the mission of Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas as guided by the Catholic Social Teachings through the establishment and implementation of English Language Learning (ELL) classes to refugees, immigrants, migrants, and community members. This part-time teaching position will assist the Program Coordinator by teaching classes, taking attendance, completing student record-keeping, assisting with enrollments, and providing general classroom and program support to staff members while working directly with adult students. This position will conduct in-person and online learning classes at the Wyandotte County location as well as other locations as needed. ย The position will also assist the Program Coordinator with volunteer management, including conducting orientations and trainings, volunteer and student meetings, and collecting volunteer hours. Evening availability required. EEO.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS


  • ย Part-time position requiring approximately 20 hours per week. Work hours will primarily be scheduled during evenings, with the potential for weekend hours as needed to support program activities.ย 
  • ย Teach 5 to 8 sections of weekly pre-literate to intermediate level ELL classes to adult refugees. Classes currently start at 60 to 90 minutes long and have up to 15 students per class.
  • ย Work with Program Coordinator to schedule and enroll new program participants into ELL program via onsite, offsite, and remote enrollment sessions to increase student numbers in the program.
  • ย Supplement and utilize selected curriculum for both literate and preliterate adults. Create and organize additional material, as needed for in-person and remote learning classes. These lessons could be given to volunteer teachers who lead their own classes/groups.
  • ย Complete duties in a variety of locations, including in-office, in public meeting spaces (such as libraries or other community organizations), as well as in client homes as necessary. Driving may be required within service area.
  • Maintain all necessary documentation of student data, attendance records, pre- and post-assessment scoring, case notes, and reports in Apricot, G-Drive, and SharePoint databases to ensure agency and grant compliance.
  • Support Program Coordinator and the ELL team in training volunteers to use appropriate curriculum and literacy resources.ย 
  • Train students to use public transportation or remote learning platforms to ย access ELL classes as needed.
  • Conduct program services in a culturally sensitive manner.ย 
  • Collaborate with Catholic Charities' internal and external community programs to maintain student participation in the ELL classes and provide resources for success. This position regularly communicates with the students and their case managers to maintain compliance.
  • Maintain an Outlook calendar to organize and coordinate program support. This position will participate in team and ย ย ย ย ย departmental meetings as scheduled.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

MINIMUM POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • ย Classroom teaching experience, experience teaching early literacy preferred.
  • ย Bachelor's degree in education and/or TESOL/TEFL Certification preferred.ย 
  • ย Experience working with refugees desired.
  • ย Ability to work with diverse client populations, community organizations and various professionals, as well as staff at all levels.
  • ย Fluency in English required, and another language desirable (Spanish, Dari, Swahili, Arabic, etc.).
  • ย Must possess a valid Kansas or Missouri Driver's license, dependable transportation, current vehicle insurance and a verified safe driving record.ย 
  • ย Must be willing to work a flexible schedule that will include evenings.ย 
  • ย Must have competent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills along with strong computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office programs.
  • ย Must be reliable, punctual, professional, able to follow instructions and handle emergencies. Must also be able to work independently from general instructions.
