Description of Responsibilities and Duties
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Obeys all federal, state, and local laws, policies, regulations, administrative codes, and transportation operation guidelines.
  • Obeys all traffic laws; observes all mandatory safety regulations for buses. This includes clearing the school bus and evacuating students quickly in the event of an emergency.
  • Maintains safe driver standards and applicable physical and dexterity standards.
  • Supervises students and maintains discipline while transporting them; complies with discipline policies set forth in the school Code of Conduct.
  • Exercises responsible leadership when on school field trips (in or out of district)
  • Reports all accidents and participates/meets all post-accident drug testing requirements.
  • Performs pre and post-inspection activities to include, but are not limited to - mechanical defects, adequate fuel/fluid levels, items left on the bus, vandalism to the bus interior, and cleaning of bus.
  • Participates in onsite training.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Available nights, weekends, and occasionally Holidays.

Required Qualifications
  • Minimum: High School Diploma/GED
  • Minimum:
    Must have an acceptable driving record as specified by the NC DOT and UNCSA. Must have an acceptable criminal record as specified by UNCSA.
  • Must maintain a current CDL Class B license with passenger and school bus endorsement.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Considerable knowledge of safe and efficient practices and procedures used in the operation of a bus.
  • Considerable knowledge of traffic laws and bus regulations.
  • Considerable knowledge of safety regulations and standards for buses.
  • General knowledge of Transportation Department Operating Instructions.
  • Ability to physically inspect the bus according to Transportation Department Operating Instructions.
  • Must possess an acceptable driving record as outlined by the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles as legal requirements for issuance of a bus driver certification
  • Must meet requirements regarding health conditions.
  • Must not have conditions of a criminal nature that would cause disqualification.
  • Ability to detect and report observable mechanical defects or failures on the bus.
  • Ability to maintain the discipline of students on the bus.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in appraising situations that may arise when dealing with students/patrons/traffic situations.
  • Ability to maintain a clean bus.
  • Ability to complete required reports.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative in applying standards to a variety of work situations.
  • Ability to exercise tact and courtesy in contact with parents/guardians or students and with school personnel.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
